Dedupe Storage Options

I am looking for a lower cost dedupe storage option anyone have any suggestions or experience with a particular product.  We have looked into "Data Domain" and are now looking to see if there is a cheaper alternative.  I have herd Sun ZFS as an alternative and was wondering if anyone had any input.

Thanks.

  • Consider NetBackup Media Server Deduplication.

You can use any supported Media server with enough processing power and network throughput attached to disk that can provide recommended throughput.

Depending on where in the world you are, another option is Symantec's appliances.

    See datasheets:

Your local Symantec reseller will be able to give you advice and pricing guidelines.

  • Can you do media server dedupplicaion for data that is going to tape?

  • De-Duplication refers to data going to disk

You cannot de-dupe to tape - when you duplicate from de-dupe disk to tape it is re-hydrated

  • I've had mixed answers in the past with regards to licensing for dedupe. Is the client-side dedupe native, or an add on with FETB licensing? My understaing from last year was it was included and media server dedupe was extra, but I haven't found a clear answer yet.

  • My understanding is its 1 license (FETB) for Dedup its up to you whether you do dedup client side or at Media server.

Had good experiences with Data Domains.

  • I don't really know the price, but Dell is known to be cheaper than EMC. Have a look to the new DR4000.

Quantum also provides Dedup storage appliances.
