Difference between Host based license and capacity based license

But one thing, what is Front end data?

As per my post above: ' ... total amount of data on clients that need to be protected.' This is the equivalent of one full backup on all clients. It does not matter how many backups you take, if data on all clients is for example 1TB, you purchase 1TB capacity license. Even if you take full backups every day for a year.

Does it calculate all clients data size before starting any backup?

For database server, database backup is taken by separate policy, and BMR backuup of that database server is taken by another policy. Can you clarify this situation for capacity based solution?

Suppose today it takes FULL  backup of 500GB for a server, and tomorrow data size is reduced to 400 GB. then it takes FULL Backup of  400 GB for that server. What will be the protected data- 500 GB or 400 GB?

Nothing will happen.

NBU licenses are based on honesty. It does not stop working when capacity is exceeded.

It should be fine to perform an audit of your environment once a year when renewal is due and purchase additional capacity if needed.

The amount of data on clients determine front-end capacity. Not amount of policies or the amount of backups.

Capacity is sold per TB, so 100 GB is not going to make a difference.
As I've said above - perform an audit once a year to calculate current data on clients.

As of right now there is no life monitoring of this, so should you exceed your limit NetBackup will not suddenly stop.

You do need to regularly monitor this however since exceeding this is a breach of your license agreement!

NetBackup does come with a tool for checking this data:

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbdeployutil

As far as I know the tool will check last months backups, so in your above case I would asume that for a month it will actually still report 500GB and after that only 400GB. I cannot guarantee this however, best to check with your Symantec reseller. Same goes with the exact way it calculates DB and BMR. The tool should be a good indication of how much front end TB you would have to buy however.

AS Host based and Capacity licenses cannot be mixed in the same environment.

 So  Could I replace my existing master & media server from Host base to Capacity base. If possible,   clients and database can run with existing configuration ?

Server, Client and Database licenses are added to the master server. 

You need to choose which licensing model - Capacity or Host based. You cannot have both.

As I have said previously - PLEASE discuss your licensing needs with your local Symantec reseller.

actually we have currently running symantec netbackup with Host based license. we have separate master,media,client and database license. 

As our host and database for different priject are growing,we talk with local Symantec reseller. they suggest capacity based solution.

Now we are planned to move from Host based solution to capacity based solution.

So my question is that, could we use existing maste & media by removing all host based licnese (master/media/database etc) form master/media server and add capacity based  licnese to that master/media server?

When you convert from traditional to capacity based licensing you should get a "trade-in" value from you current licenses

They all then cease to be valid (in honesty terms) and you will receive in its place a single license key

You should then remove the license keys from your existing Master and Media Servers and replace them with your new single license key - thi is the same key for all servers - makes life very simple!
