Disk Pool Re-sizing

Hi ,

i have 2 disks pools  (as showing in the attached)

 1- New_Pool and  (advancedisk)

2- dp_disk_drccbu01 (PureDisk)

everything is working fine with me just initially when we configure new_pool (advance Disk)we have taken all the backup on a storage unit

which is reside on this pool, later on we decide to configure another disk pool (pureDisk) and create new storage unit and start all backups on it which we need exactly,

now what i need is the bellow:

1)delete New_pool Disk pool (all the images into this pool is not needed).

2)increase the size of dp_disk_drccbu01 (pureDisk) with the free size which is deleted from new_pool.

can someone help me if that's is possible? if yes then how?

thanks

  • A storage unit has no relation to the size of the pool so dont confuse storage units with the actual pools

If you have removed the advanced disk pool (or shrunk it to nothing  - i hope everything you did was using the CLISH or web gui for the appliance) then if it is no longer used you can delete that from the console - you do have to do this in the right order though as per the tech notes

If the de-dupe pool has been expanded then it would usually update the sizes automatically but if not right click on that disk pool and choose "inventroy disk pool"

This allows you to run an inventory which basically updates the information about the pool (which would include the new size)

It may just be how you have written it but it does concern me when you say things like partitioning and created MSDP - did you do anything manually on the appliance here or was it all done viw the CLISH or web GUI?

  • Thanks but as I mentioned before , I already resize the dedup from appliance GUI.. I think I need to do what Mark says from nbu gui to try inventory the disks

  • You don't need to do anything from NBU, login to web interface of your appliance and resize your dedup from there. when resize put the nubmber (size) that you want to keep for your dedup pool.

I would suggest you to not delete advance disk, keep some space (may be couple of hundred gig) for your catalog and may be your database backups.

  • ok mark got you, let me try "inventroy disk pool" on dedup pureDisk pool tomorrow after i delet the advanceDisk pool,

    thanks for all of you,

let me explain to you more about the current setup and mu confusion,

this is an appliance 5230 , initially i have petitioning the appliance in 2 partition one Dedup almost 80%

and advanceDisk 20%, i have created MSDP then create both disks pools (in the attached pic) then i have created the stu on Advance disk pool which we start all the backups on to it, later one what i did is ,

i have repartitioning the appliance  by deleting the 20% advance disk partition and then  i shrink the dedup petition to 100% (full size )

then from NBU console i have deleted the  stu which is reside on Advance disk pool,

then create another stu on pureDisk which all my backup policy running on to it,

    my questions is:

1- as you see in the attached pic for both disk pools, we have available space for both , the new_pool which i don't need has 22 TB , if i delete this pool is that mean i will have 22TB free space that can be added to the other disk pool which is pureDisk? then this size will be reflecting to the stu reside on the pureDisk pool?

2-pureDisk pool has 19TB , is that mean that the stu which is created has 19 TB capacity size?

So whatever all of you advise me before is applicable ?

note: AIR is configured already on this server as source Domain for the pureDisk pool which is fine and what we need,

    thanks ,

  • Make sure you follow the right process for removing your advanced disk pool, or you may have problems in the future if you ever want to create another advanced disk pool.

Something like what is below, is good. There may be a more recent one around

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH150431

If puredisk pool is on the same server maybe you should ask support if the above process is still valid.

  • If this is a windows then it should be straight forward

As Marianne says, expire all images in the Advanced disk pool, delete the disk pool, storage units etc. and then make both disks dynamic and expand the PureDisk Pool (I assume MSDP) disk onto the Advanced disk

In this way it will actually provide more spindles for it and so improve performance

Obviously this cannot go above 64TB (assuming you are up to date with NetBackup - if not 32TB)

    Hope this helps

  • You will need to expire all images on the advanced disk before you will be able to remove the disk pool.

It is not possible to add another disk to MSDP pool - only one disk/volume is allowed.

You can grow existing volume at hardware level or Storage Foundation (if installed) and then re-inventory in NBU.
