DR Question for two Master Servers - different geographic locations.

We are in the process of planning a DR scenario for two of our Win2003 NBU 7.0.1 Master Servers.

ServerA is located in Texas, ServerW is located in North Carolina.  Both servers are members in the same Active Directory domain, the same OU even.  We want to build a Master NBU DR server for each of them at the other's location, so that DR ServerA is located in North Carolina; and DR ServerW is located in Texas, however, Active Directory will not allow two systems with identical names in the same Domain/OU.

We realize that the DR Servers HAVE TO HAVE THE SAME NAME AS THEIR PRODUCTION/ORIGINAL SERVERS, as well as the same Hardware, OS and version of NBU, so would we have to build each of theses DR Master servers off the network, leave them off and bring them up when we are ready to test the DR plan or implement it for real??

Any ideas, suggestions, comments?

Thanks,

Sven

  • Master server DR requires that NetBackup master server on each side must be configured with same hostname. This does not mean you have to configure each host with same node name.

Prepare same alias host name for each host, and register it into hosts file using IP address it own.

  • Perhaps AIR (Auto Image Replication) would be of use to you - you would need to upgrade to a later version (7.1 or 7.5)  and implement De-Dupe but if you have the bandwidth you could hold a copy of all data at both sites ready for immediate restore - no longer a need for a DR setup, just your two Masters haveing a copy of each others backups as well as their own.

If you go for DR Masters at each site in standby mode the hosts file trick mentioned above will work for you but you do need to be careful as NetBackup nicely writes the real netbios name into config files so it all works fine but a major upgrade (7.0 to 7.1) will fail as a result.
