Drives marked as AVR

Hello Friends,

I am preparing for Netbackup interview and came across one common interview question:

  1. If you have a SCSI attached robot and in device monitor you see the drives marked as AVR, what does that mean and how would you fix it?

On trying to search for a solution for the same, I came across a post which says that in this case the drives run with AVR (Automatic Volume Recognition) mode enabled.

What does this AVR mean?  I tried to understand the same, but each time, I go through some information in relation to this, I get a bit confused.  I would like to understand the concept of AVR in simple language.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Jecintha

  • Drives in AVR status means one of the following:

    1. Tape drives are configured as standalone (not in any robot)
    2. Problem with robot communication

Please let us know which NBU version and which OS on NBU server with robot control - troubleshooting is a lot easier if we have as much detail as possible.

    Please also post output of:

    vmoprcmd -d

    tpconfig -l

    (Windows path: <install-path>\veritas\volmgr\bin
    Unix/Linux path: /usr/openv/volmgr/bin)

        There is no query here.
        The 2012 post was solved.

If you have a new query, please start a new discussion.
  • adding to mariannes excellent post, please also post the output of scan coomand, from the robot control host. martin

  • Hi Andy,

Its true I am preparing for the interview; and the sole purpose of posting this query was to understand the concept of AVR.

Thanks Marriane, your post was indeed helpful in getting my doubt clarified.

  • Oops! Missed the "I am preparing for Netbackup interview" part! blush

I hate these Interview questions - most of them can be answered in a number of different ways... I think I would fail a lot of them!

    Good luck!
