Exchange Restore with NetBackup 6.5

I've been asked to restore an Exchange mailbox store from a couple of years back. I found some old netbackup licenses and managed to install NetBacup, I've done a phase 1 and 2 import of some tapes and I'm able to restore flat files e.g. a .pst file. I'm now trying to restore an Exchange mailbox store to the Exchange server. I want to restore til "First Storage Group\Restore MBStore". When I start the job i get the following status log. I don't know how to proceed, so I hope someone can help me. My experience with netbackup is limited especially in this restore scenario.

01-12-2010 09:52:02 - begin Restore
01-12-2010 09:52:20 - media QDE616 required
01-12-2010 09:52:20 - restoring image loke_1200788400
01-12-2010 09:57:57 - Error bpbrm(pid=4796) cannot read the list of files to backup or archive
01-12-2010 09:58:02 - Error bpbrm(pid=4796) client restore EXIT STATUS 53: backup restore manager failed to read the file list
01-12-2010 10:00:58 - restored image loke_1200788400 - (cannot connect on socket(25)); restore time 00:08:38
01-12-2010 10:00:58 - end Restore; elapsed time: 00:08:56
the restore failed to recover the requested files(5)

Restore environment:

Windows 2003 R2 x86 - Netbackup server (not a domain member)

Windows 2003 R2 x86 - Domain Controller

Windows 2003 R2 x86  / Exchange 2003 SP2 (domain member)

Names of DC and exchange server are the same as when the backup was made.

  • i.e.

    "...
To specify the server, client, and policy type for a restore operation
1 Choose File > Specify NetBackup Machines and Policy Type.
2 In the Specify NetBackup Machines and Policy Type dialog box, from the Server to use for backups and restores list, select the desired server.
3 From the Source client for restores list, select the desired client. The source client is the Exchange Server machine name whose backup images you would like to browse.
4 From the Policy type for restores list, choose MS-Exchange-Server.
5 If you want to redirect a restore to a different client, select the client to which to redirect the restore. (From the Destination clients for restores list.)
    6 Click OK.
    ..."

  • I did that... otherwise I wouldn't be able to select the mailbox store to restore, as far as I know.

  • Have you got access to the Exchange Admin Guide?

There's a whole host of info regarding restore requirements & procedures:
