Faulting application dbbackex.exe, version 6.5.2007.723

Hi there,

I have a mster backup server NetBackup 6.5.6 (OS: Win2k3, EE 64bit w/sp2) and SQL server 2005 (OS: Win2k3, EE 32bit w/sp2). The NetBackup MS SQL Client is 6.5.2007.723. A database was backed up successfully but when i restore it, under View Status i can see Unknown operation type is In Process,

but nothing else following up even after 1 day long i can wait and from the master backup server i dont see any restore job was submitted by the NetBackup MS SQL Client. on the SQL server, windows log has an app error message,

i went through the totally same procedure and steps to backup and restore database on another dev server with same master backup server successfully. there's no significant difference between this SQL server and the dev server. the backup and restore was fine on the SQL server but pretty long time ago and no change to the server so far. i am stuck here with confusion. anyone can help me out?

    Is the client in question an Itanium-based host?

    If yes, then try to open a support case with ET2142648.

    They will send you a patch.

    Do one thing first. Keep the Netbackup Master/Media and Netbackup Client on same version.

    Check the SQL own logs which i think must help you and also share the sql logs ans Netbackup Activity Monitor

    Have you ever done a successful restore of this SQL Sever databases? if yes ,  and do you have a chance to restart your SQL Server machine ? if yes ,  you can reboot the database machine , and do a restore , see what will happen .

    sql log doesn't have any event related to the restore. NetBackup Activity Monitor doesn't show any restore job. looks like it's not submitted to the master backup server by NetBackup MS SQL Client.

    sql restore was successful once at least but it was long time ago and I wasn't involved. SQL server was recently rebooted with no improvement.

    The SQL client is an Itanium server and the master backup server is IBM. I am going to obtain the patch but wonder if it's a bug, the restore shouldn't be successful even once? Any KB article addresses the issue?

    The TechNote for this Etrack is TECH126149, but was written before 6.5.6 was even out and doesn't mention it:

    BUG REPORT: After Upgrade to 6.5.4 or 6.5.5 on IA 64 servers NetBackup MS SQL client will crash when trying to save backup script file.

    Looks like we need to update it to add 6.5.6 (and mention that 6.5.7 doesn't exist!)

    (FYI: This issue does not occur in NetBackup 7.x)

    in my case the NetBackup SQL client is version 6.5.2007.723 and the faulting module is dbbackmain.dll version 6.5.2007.723, and on another server where i dont have any issue, the NetBackup client is 6.5.2008.618, but in the TechNote, the Netbackup client is 6.5.2009.430, faulting module
    mfc42u.dll, version 6.5.9146.0.

    it's very similar but different. do you think the patch can fix my issue?

    The version numbers are probably different because you're at 6.5.6 instead of 6.5.4 or 6.5.5 (and I think different architectures have different build number as well), but yes, given everything I've read in this thread so far I do think the EEB will resolve your issue.

    (After it does, be sure to mark Anton's post as the solution as I would not have been able to give you this information without his "heads up" reply!)

    EDIT: AND the TechNote has now been updated to include 6.5.6.  :)
