FETB and Puredisk Licensing

I have a FETB license of 5 TB and also have traditional licenses like std client, Tapelibrary etc.

How this FETB works along with traditional licenses?

Whether FETB is only for Puredisk?

Whether FETB is applicable if I take the backups in Tape drives, VTL and basic disks?

As per my understanding FETB is for raw data which is protected by Netbackup not the Deduplicated data. is it right?

    FETB is a calculation method, NOT a licensing model. I think this is where you are getting hung up.

    The FETB licensing you have is ONLY calculated for use of the Data Protection Option (the renewal option you listed).  Front End TeraByte calculation is used in two DIFFERENT cases:

    1. your case (using the Traditional Licensing model) for calculating the amount of data you will be protecting in your Puredisk pools; you must still pay extra for each client license, each server licesnse, each tape drive, etc.
    2. or in Platform Usage model, where FETB is used to allow you unlimited clients, tape drives, servers, etc.  This model would cost you far more per FETB than the Traditional Licensing model's cost for just the Puredisk function.

    Hi,

     

    platform licensing (TB) cannot be used / mixed with traditional licensing, unless you've just got the data optimization license which comes in TB.

     

    It is measure by what is backed up FROM the client. In other words the amount of data lying on your client that will be protected.

    NetBackup Licensing Models

    Symantec currently offers customers two licensing models to purchase NetBackup: Platform Base model and Standard model. Customers may choose between licensing models, but cannot mix and match license models within the same NetBackup domain.

    Note that some options available in the Standard licensing model are licensed per front-end terabyte. While this is a capacity-based meter, this is different than the Platform Base model, which is a bundled offering where every piece of the solution is on the front-end terabyte meter.

     

    Your TB license would be for either on of the below (unless its outdated)

     

    NetBackup Platform Base Licensing Model

    NetBackup Platform Base licensing is a capacity-based model using the amount of source data protected per-terabyte as the calculation meter. This model is commonly referred to as capacity licensing or Front-End Terabyte (FETB) licensing. The Platform Base model enables customers to license NetBackup based on how much source data is protected rather than the number of NetBackup clients, agents, servers, and options deployed as with Standard licensing.

    The Platform Base model is beneficial to customers who currently have, or plan to deploy, advanced features of NetBackup such as Enterprise Client (V-Ray, SAN Client, etc.), Data Protection Optimization (Intelligent Deduplication, Accelerator, OST, AIR), Replication Director, OpsCenter Analytics, or Application and Database Packs. The Platform Base licensing model supports customers with multiple locations within the same domain, and customers with multiple domains as long as the total number of front-end terabytes is licensed. Customers with multiple domains also have the option of using different licensing models in each respective domain, but customers are not allowed to utilize both the Platform Base licensing model and the Standard licensing model within the same domain. Customers with more than 25 front-end terabytes are recommended to consider the VPA program.

    The Platform Base licensing model offers two editions: Complete and NDMP. The Complete Edition includes all source data being protected in the capacity calculation with no distinction on how the data is being protected. The NDMP Edition offers a reduced licensing fee for data being backed up using only NDMP or Replication Director.

    The Platform Base licensing model includes most but not all NetBackup features and products. NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO) and Symantec Desktop and Laptop Option (DLO) are not included in the Platform Base licensing model and must be licensed separately. For this reason, customers can purchase MSEO and DLO within a domain that is licensed through the Platform Base licensing model.

     

    NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option (DPOO)

    NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is designed to provide a set of NetBackup features geared towards enhancing data protection by optimizing storage requirements, network bandwidth usage, impact on client systems etc. This is a license bundle that provides all the features listed below.

    Enterprise Disk Option (EDO) Included

    NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication Feature

    NetBackup Accelerator Feature

    NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) Feature

    Auto Image Replication (AIR) Feature

    NetBackup Virtual Tape Feature

    As a Symantec partner, you have access to the NetBackup Licensing Guide on PartnerNet.

    This 5TB FETB is probably for Advanced/Enterprise Disk? 
    This way you can use the FETB license with traditional licenses.

    Puredisk or Media server dedupe license is called Data Protection Optimization and can be used as an add-on to traditional licenses.

    Platform Base – Complete Edition cannot be used with traditional licenses.

    Platform Base – Complete Edition for NBU 7.6 and later includes all options and features, including dedupe.

    Best to check descriptions on your license key certificates and read through the Licensing Guide.

    Hi,

     

    Thanks for the reply..

    I have read the entire licensing guide but  am getting lot of confusion on the FETB, please clarify.

    Symantec Netbackup Enterprise disk 7.5
    Symantec Net Backup data protection option 7.5 xplate 1 front end tb renewal essential 12 Months rewards band E

     

    I have both enterprise disk as well as FETB, as Marianne said it is for traditional licenses.

    But how FETB works with traditional licensing?

    Download the 7.6 guide as yours is outdated so your questions would really be irrelevant now.

     

    Symantec Netbackup Enterprise disk 7.5 was INCLUDED Symantec Net Backup data protection option

     

    traditional covers your server , client , db/app components. per TB covers the Symantec Net Backup data protection you add so you can do dedupe/vtl/etc
