  • a dirty drive head to a more serious h/w issue requiring replacement of the drive.

Do you always have issues with the same drive?

  • Freezing media while taking any backup's in the sense it maight be due to media write error .

Are you able to see in the admin console , which ever the backups you are running whether its giving any media write error or not . If consequent 3 error occurs on a perticular media with in 12 hrs then the media will be freezed .

media write errors may happen due to issue with drive , check the drives .

  • You can unfreeze the media in the GUI under media. Right click on the media and select unfreeze.

    unfreeze media in GUI

  • Run Tape Logs Report for the last couple of days. You will find all errors with tape media that were encountered.

If there is al lot of info in the report, use the 'filter' option to exclude 'Info' type messages, leaving you with Warning and Error messages.

  • unfreezing doesn't help, i have checked the error logs and i found out that there was a write error, but i would like to know what caused the write_error .

  • Increase Media Management logging by adding VERBOSE entry to ...\veritas\volmgr\vm.conf on the media server. Restart NBU.

Device errors will be logged in Event Viewer System and Application log.

Also ensure that you have bptm log on the media server for further troubleshooting.

  • I assume that media in frozen state contain data in format such as tar, cpio, netbackup offline catalog backup or so. Once unfreeze them and label.
