Full and Incremental backup

Hi Experts,

IF 1 have a scheduled backup say sunday is full and monday to saturday is incremental.

What would happen if sunday full backup gets failed and monday incremental is successful?

Does it mean that incremental on Monday has taken full backup on monday or will it take the incremental from saturday?

Thanks,

  • Hi Hargyan,

The Monday Incremental backup will not be/take the Full backup.

In the incremental backup, how it identifies the files to be backup is depends on Archive Bit.

How archive bit used to identify the file to be backup,

The archive bit is a file attribute used by Microsoft operating systems, by OS/2 and by AmigaOS. Typically its state indicates whether or not the file has been backed up. On Windows and OS/2, when a file is created or modified, the archive bit is set, and when the file has been backed up, the archive bit is cleared.

So, those files which Archive bit set will be backed up on Monday

Hope this will make it clear.

  • It also depends on retention setting of your backup. NetBackup determines time of previous backup from its catalogs. If you configured cumulative incremental backup  and all full backup have been expired at that time, this  cumulative icremental backup has no reference for full backup. Thus, this cumulative backup will take all the files like full.

Whereas if you set long retention for full backup, and if full backup of previous week lives, next cumulative incremental takes changes from last living successful full backup.
