How can we identify the data written on the tapes.

Hi.

We have 2 magazines, left magazine with  8 tapes and empty right magazine. I would like to know how can we identify the data written on the which tapes.

Can I segregate tapes according to the policies created, Like , we have 8 servers to be backed up on daily, monthly basis, so we created 8 different policies. Can I assign each tape for each policies created.

  • I agree with Bill - no need to micro-manage. NBU knows where data is written. As long as you have sufficient media for different retention levels, allow NBU to add multiple clients to the same tape.
Hopefully your robot has a barcode reader and your tapes have barcode labels on them?

You will even see improvement in throughput if you allow multiplexing in Storage Unit and schedules (MPX=4 is normally good starting point).

Please bear in mind that NBU does not mix retention levels. You can override this setting, but it is never a good idea - works seemingly well initially until tape fills up and cannot be overwritten because of retention mix on tapes. All images must expire before tape can be overwritten. See this blog for more info:

If you need to know what images are on tapes, use 'Images on media' in Reports section.

If you need to restore a specific file/folder for any of the Clients, use BAR (Backup, Archive & Restore) GUI to browse for files/folders. If you then click Media Preview button, NBU will display the Media IDs where backup was written.
