how do I import NB5.X catalog into NB6?

I'm a newbie who is currently running NB5.1MP6 with a new install of NB6MP4 on a new server. I have imported the policies but now need to import the catalogs. My objective is to be able to perform restores on the NB6 server from backups made using the old NB5 server. Has anyone done this and what else may need to be imported? (looking through both admin guides hasen't helped much). Thanks in advance.

  • A v5 catalog cannot be imported into a v6 system.
  • Ok---so what happens if I don't import the catalog and down the road I need to restore a backup created by NB5? Can't I just import what is needed at that time for the restore? I know it may be time consuming but at this point I will have to start from scratch again by loading NB5 then upgrade to NB6 to keep the NB5 catalog. I already have NB6 up and running on a new server and currently performing test backups.
  • You can always import old media from old versions of NetBackup.

Just write protect your old media so that there's no chance of expiring media being overwritten, or NetBackup attempting to write to the media because it's new in the robot/environment.  Does anyone know whether NetBackup will simply overwrite any tape - or does NetBackup check, and if it sees NetBackup headers does it reject the tape?  I know that NetBackup can be set to overwrite other formats, but does it by default overwrite its own formated/headered tapes?

yes, that is what I would do because the import takes a long time.

  • Well, actually what I DID do, was to bring in an entirely new master server and slowly migrated clients to it while keeping the 5.1 master in production for doing restores.
