    My suggestion is:

Deactivate the media server on the Master server by running

    vmoprcmd -deactive_host -h <media_servername>

nbemmcmd -updatehost -machinename <media_servername> -machinestateop set_admin_pause -machinetype media -masterserver <master_server>

Change the storage units of any policies that explicitly use this media server and re-direct them to another media server.

Fix the issue on the media server that is down. If the server is not actually down, stop netbackup from running.

    When all resolved, reactivate using:

    vmoprcmd -activate_host -h <media_servername>

nbemmcmd -updatehost -machinename <media_servername> -machinestateop clr_admin_pause -machinetype media -masterserver <master_server>

  • Is your question about a short-term solution while replacement is installed and configured (e.g. what happens to tonight's backup if Media Server crashes at 5PM)?
Or do you need to know how to replace Media Server and present same disk storage and tape drives?

Short-term solution would be to have all DSSU's in STUG with failover selection (even more than one STUG) to ensure backups will go through while media server is getting fixed.

Permanent fix - If entire server needs to be replaced, follow steps in Troubleshooting Guide:
Install OS using same hostname as before, zone disk and tape, ensure devices visible/usable at OS level, mount disk to same path as before, Install & patch NBU, reconfig tape drives in NBU.
