Image cleanup

Hi, my master server is NBU 7.1.0.3 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1. My media servers are NBU 7.1.0.3 on AIX 6.1. Our media servers are backed up to dedupe pool.

I have a few questions regarding image cleanup:

1) Is the image cleanup job done by master server or media server?

2) If by media server, how does NBU decide which media server to use?

3) If by media server, can I modify any settings to force NBU to use specific media server?

4) If by master server, why it shows to grant resources to media server in Job Details?

Thanks in advance.

  • There is nothing documented for image cleanup. You will probably have to log a 'request for enhancement'.

  • What kind of dedupe pool? Puredisk or Media Server Dedupe?

There are 2 parts to image cleanup:

    1. Cleanup of expired images in image database on master
    2. Cleanup of disk images on media server

How NBU decides on the media server depends on the type of disk storage.

Local disk storage (e.g. Media Server dedupe) will be done by the Media server that wrote the backup.

With 'shared' Media Server access such as OST, the same 'Load Balancing logic' for restores is probably used for image cleanup. See TN http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH87200 for details.

Not sure if the USE_BACKUP_MEDIA_SERVER_FOR_RESTORE touchfile will work for image cleanup as well, but worth a try.

  • Hi Marianne, thanks for your replies. We are using PureDisk (NetBackup 5020 appliances). The USE_BACKUP_MEDIA_SERVER_FOR_RESTORE touchfile is alreay in place but seems it has no effect to image cleanup.
