Imported Tape, the expiration date changed

Hi All,

We need to import Tapes from our older system to the current system. Inside the tape is the 5 year retention backup we backup 2 years ago. The problem was when we imported the tape, the expiration date changed, became a 5 years from now instead of 3 years for now.

Is this a normal behavior? Can we make the expiration date just follow the original tape?

Regards,

Iwan
  • The images are imported with original retention level.
The period that matches the level is then applied to the images.

Once the Phase 2 import is complete, the image has the same retention level as the original backup and a new expiration date calculated as the import date plus the retention period defined currently in Host Properties for the original backup's retention level.

Both 3 year and 5 year retentions are custom levels. The defaults are as per this doc:   https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/doc/123533878-127136857-0/v123544048-127136857

This means that retention level was probably changed in Host Properties in the meantime.

Thank you for answering my question Marianne now I know something more about the import.

But I see the custome retention has the same definition on our old NetBackup server and the new one.

      The old one:

      # bpretlevel -s

      Retention  Retention  Equivalent
        Level     Period       Days
      --------- ----------- ----------
          0     1 week         7
          1     3 weeks        21
          2     1 day          1
          3     1 month        31
          4     5 weeks        35
          5     3 months       93
          6     2 weeks        14
          7     7 years        2555
          8     1 year         365
          9     infinity
         10     expires immediately
         11     5 years        1825
         12     infinity
         13     infinity
         14     infinity
         15     infinity

      ...

      The new one:

      # bpretlevel -s

      Retention  Retention  Equivalent
        Level     Period       Days
      --------- ----------- ----------
          0     1 week         7

          2     1 day          1
          3     1 month        31
          4     5 weeks        35
          5     3 months       93
          6     2 weeks        14

You will notice that there is no retention level with 3 year expiration.

The only logical explanation is that level 11 was set to 3 years when the backup was made 2 years ago.
In the meantime, level 11 was changed to 5 years.

The old backup was imported with level 11.
That is why the imported backup now has 5 year retention/expiration.
