in an RMAN restore, what does a negative transfer rate mean?

NBU 7.7.3

when doing an RMAN restore, the restore job shows 800GB as read but the transfer rate is negative (-2147483648) and the Oracle DBA says he doesn't see any data being restored at his end, it means the RMAN restore can't find what it is looking for?

i ask this because our dba is not saying anything from his side regarding the status of the restore. i have to tell him that his restore job is asking for a tape media that is well outside the date range he used for the restore.

  • Can you show us all text in Activity Monitor Details tab?

If RMAN cannot find images, the restore attempt will fail right at the beginning. The job will not even go active.
Image lookup can be seen in bprd log on the master server.

Best to know what is actually happening is to look at logs.

On the media server, bptm log (level 1 or 3)
On the client, rman output and dbclient log.

  • A theory:

If the rman backup is a multiplexed backup, Netbackup has to read all the data in the multiplexed data stream, to extract the RMAN data. While 800GB has been read, no data has been transferred yet, however when data has been read you will have a positive value.

    Best Regards
