Inquiry regarding using Netbackup appliances across domain

We are currently managing two separate Netbackup domains, each with its own unique setup, and we are looking to make some changes to streamline our infrastructure. Below is a summary of current configuration.

Domain one configuration:

Master server with two Netbackup appliances( serving as media servers)

Domain two configuration:

Master server with two BYO servers( serving as media servers). LUN is assigned to these media servers from HP3par storage  and configured as MSDP.

We are trying to get rid off HP3par storage for future backups so,

Is it possible to use the Netbackup appliances from Domain 1 as a media servers  for domain 2 as well to manage future backups? If not, could you kindly suggest alternative approach to achieve this while eliminating the HP3par storage  from domain 2.

  • Yes, you can do it.
I would recommend doing it first in a test environment to familiarize yourself with the steps.

  • I'd look at migrating the clients in domain 2 over to domain 1. This way over time you can decommission domain 2 entirely (including the 3Par storage) once the existing backup expire.

This relies on there being sufficient storage available in the appliances.

As for adding the appliance to domain 2 - a media server can only serve one master server. To migrate an appliance to a different domain you would have to (effectively) scrap all existing backups on that appliance. If the appliances are Flex appliances, then you can always add a second instance that is connected to domain 2 (again, you need the storage to allow this to happen).

    Lots of options. Cheers

  • you can use the netbackup appliance from domain 1, but you need to remove it from domain 1 and add it to domain2.
basically you will need to add storage to take over the HP3PAR.
