Installing NBU 6.5 on Novell

I have a couple of old Novell 6.5 SP8 servers, that I need to install a NBU client on.  I know that I need to install 6.x for it, and I've got what I think are all the files for this.  I've looked through the CD contents file, but I don't see anything specifically referencing Novell, so I'm coming here.  Also, I've downloaded the 6.5 Installation Guide, and for Installing clients, it shows Windows and Unix.  Is the process for Novell the same as for Unix/Linux?

Anyone know which CLIENTS file I need for Novell?

  • This should give you the right information...

    from the documentation...

"Installing the NetWare Client differs slightly depending on whether you plan to use the Target method or use the NonTarget method for user-directed backups. For both methods, you must remotely install the NetWare Client software to the NetWare server from a Windows computer. If you plan to use the NonTarget method, the installation steps will also include installing the NetBackup for NetWare NonTarget Browser to the local Windows computer."

  • Thanks for that link.  Looks helpful so far.  One point, though.  I don't have CDs for install.  Any idea how to do the install without the CD?

  • You can download the software if you have a serial number for any 6.0 NetBackup products.

  • Sorry, wasn't clear, apparantly.  I have downloaded the 6.5 software.  But that's not on a CD.  The instructions in the guide talk about using a CD.  We've done the install on Linux, simply by extracting the tar.gz and running ./install, or /.install, whichever it is.  Is it the same way with Netware 6.5?  Is there a different client software for Netware, or does it use the CLIENTS files?

  • I haven't actually installed the NetWare client but it looks like you install it to a windows client and then push it out to your netware machine after that.

Look at page 17 of the NetWare documentation from above. Sorry, hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the help.  Figured it was going to be convoluted, as it's Novell, lol.

  • Installing & configuring NetBackup 6.5 on a NetWare server is not too difficult.  Finding the installation files is the tough part.

Here is the link to the NetWare Client Administrators Guide http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH52827

You can download the installation file from File Connect.  https://fileconnect.symantec.com/

Enter a 6.5 license key and then select version 6.5 (not 6.5.4).  The file you want to download is NetBackup_6.5_Winx86.tar.gz.  To install the client to the NetWare server, extract the files to your PC, then from your PC run ..\PC_Clnt\Netware\Setup.exe.

The latest patch for the NetWare clients that I am aware of is 6.5.2, which can be downloaded from here http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH60754.
