Installing the netbackup windows client on a Windows 2012 core server

Hi,

Has anyone installed the Symantec Windows Netbackup on a Windows 2012 core server? There was a request for us to backup Windows 2012 servers however there is no GUI installed and the Windows Admins for some reason don’t seem to want to install it.

We are not familiar with 2012 servers, from what I understand and (I could be wrong) the client can be installed using the command line? Does anyone know how to do this? If so are there any instructions/links you care to share.

Thanks for any advice, assistance, or help in advance!

  • As Chris said, a remote install is probably the easiest:

    Remote Installation

    1. PC_Clnt\x64\Setup.exe to start the setup wizard.
    2. Follow the prompts. You will have the option to specify local or
    remote installation.
    3. Refer to the Remote Installation Instructions in the NetBackup for
Microsoft Windows Client Chapter in the "NetBackup
Installation Guide for Windows" for additional installation
    instructions.

You might also be able to perform a Silent install from the command line:

To perform a silent installation of NetBackup client software on Windows
    1.  Copy the self extracting executable NB_7.5.0.6.winnt.x64.Client.Win2012.exe to the system to a temporary location.
    2.  From the command line navigate to directory where the executable is and run it to extract the file..
    3.  In the temporary directory, if you have a command line text editor, edit the silentclient.cmd file so the script installs the client software as needed.

or edit the silentclient.cmd on another system and copy it into place

    4.  Run the silentclient.cmd script.
    5. To verify that the installation was successful, check the installation log file
    in the following directory:
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Symantec\NetBackup\InstallLogs

  • This might completely betray my ignorance about Windows 2012 core, but is it possible for you to attempt to perform a remote installation of the client from another PC where you CAN see the GUI?

There aren't any command line instructions listed on the package itself:

Maintenance Release NB_7.5.0.6.winnt.x64.Client.Win2012.exe provides support for Symantec NetBackup (tm) Client on Windows 2012 and Windows 8.
