Hi Experts, Environment: Master and Media servers running on Linux, NBU version 7.6.0.2. Tape Libraries: StorageTek SL3000, Firmware 3.61 We recently replaced LTO4 Tape Drives with LTO6 Tape Drives on our 2 STK SL3000 Tape libraries. The upgrade of Drives was done 1 week apart for each library. First upgrade went ahead without any issues but after the upgrade of 2nd library we were not able to scan tape drives and Robots. We Engaged Symantec Support and they did some changes in the Device Mappings files. After the change in the device mappings file, cople of tries failed but then in the 3rd try Robots, Drives and Storage units were configured. We performed the inventory and every thing looked fine. Couple days later we had to run an inventory and when we clicked Robot > Inventory Robot from Java Console, the window appeared only with the master server name in it and without any robots showing in the window. We tried Netbackup Administration Console and tried the inventory, it did show both the robots and was able to run the inventory. During the troubleshooting we have updated the Device Mapping file to latest version 1.23. Checked all media servers for consistency. This issue has been going on for almost 3 weeks and Symantec has not yet able to resolve it. Any help will be appreciated. Other symptoms: 1. Robot Diagnostics fails for 1 library (all 4 steps). 2. Robtest from the media servers controlling the library is successful. 3. Scan -changer shows the robot 4. Scan for a drive via Wizard configures the drive as standalone. 5. PC running Java Console is out of equation, issue is persistent from any PC.

Symantec has finally resolved the issue. The device mapping file was not renamed properly when it was replaced last time. Renaming the file fixed the issue.

Apologies - I have missed your last post above....

The output seems fine - each media server sees one locally attached robot and tape drives.

What seems to be the problem?

Have you tried to run device config wizard again?
(GUI or vmoprcmd .... -autoconfig as per previous post)

To recreate OS device entries:

On Linux, you just delete the device files and reboot …

Something along these lines …

At this point, verify devices at OS level:

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Check devices again with 'scan command'.

Try to use cmd to add devices (this is similar to device config wizard in the GUI):

On master:
vmoprcmd -h <media server name> -timeout 3600 -autoconfig -a

The alternative is to manually add the devices - robot, then tape drives. Use scan output to map OS device paths to position in robot.
Or drag the drives in the GUI wizard to their position.

e.g. drive1 in robot with serial # 10WT027929 is /dev/nst11.

The Connect Spam filter blocked the output last night.
When this happens, you can always send a PM to one of the Trusted Advisors or the Community Admin (Eileen) to publish your post.

Scan output seems fine on both media servers.

Which one has the problem?

I think I see something weird...

On both media servers their seems to be a descrepancy between some /dev/sg and /dev/nst drive names.

1st media server:

Device Name : "/dev/nst7"
Passthru Name: "/dev/sg7"

Device Name : "/dev/nst3"
Passthru Name: "/dev/sg3"

Device Name : "/dev/nst5"
Passthru Name: "/dev/sg5"

Device Name : "/dev/nst6"
Passthru Name: "/dev/sg6"

Device Name : "/dev/nst4"
Passthru Name: "/dev/sg4"

Device Name : "/dev/nst0"
Passthru Name: "/dev/sg0"

Device Name : "/dev/nst1"
Passthru Name: "/dev/sg1"

Device Name : "/dev/nst2"

and from here onwards they all differ...

Now, all of these device names are generated by the OS.
I think these descrepancies is causing confusion in NBU.

I have a feeling that if you can clean out device tree (/dev/nst and /dev/sg) and recreate them, then NBU device wizard will probably add them correctly.

Please show us output of 'scan'. (No options. ) This will show the robot and what exactly the robot reports as far as drives in the robot, their position in the robot and their serial numbers. Rest of output will show drives at OS level, their device paths and serial numbers, which should correspond with with the serial numbers that the robot is reporting.
