Is it possible to configure "seeding" for backup replication or duplication

There is a technote which describe "how to seed the fingerprint cache to speed up the initial backup"...

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH144437

But this technote describes only the seeding mechanism for a "client", and for "client side deduplication" !

Is it possible to seed for replication or duplication between two media servers with MSDP ?

  • I dont believe that there is a seeding utility for Opt-dedupe.

What would generally be done if that werte required is to either have the second MSDP held locally initially so that both are on a high speed local network or if that is not possible you can also duplicate a set of tapes onto the appliance on the remote site to seed the fingerprints on that site (so ship some tapes to that site and duplicate them from a library there onto the MSDP to build up the fingerprint cache)

    Hope this helps

  • Thank you - I will try to send and backup the data on the remote site.

However, I do not find how to monitor duplication  between the local and a remote media server...

Is it possible to know how many bytes (raw or deduplicated) have been transfered between the two media servers ?

  • All you really have it the OpsCenter reports (SLP Status and SLP Backlog) or you can use the nbstlutil commands:

    nbstlutil -report

    nbstlutil stlilist -image_incomplete -U

    nbstlutil pendimplist

    nbstlutil repllist -U

Try these on bith sites to get a feel for what they show you

    Hope this helps
