Joining Netbackup Media server to existing Master server (backup domain)

Recently we have been expanding our site, and one of the activity is to deploy a new NBU media server and join the the current Master server (backup domain).

May I know after the installation of media server:

  1. Do I need to edit/ config anything on the current Master server (or Java GUI)
  2. How can I verify from the Media server that I have successfully joined to the Master server
  3. In case I have inputted wrongly media server hostname, how can I modify to the correct without re-install the media server? Is there any config file allows me to change the current hostname and which command should I use to restart the current Netbackup server for it to take affect?
  • Hi jasonle

When you install NetBackup on the media server, part of the process is to specify the master server (and obtain the master server CA certificate and the host certificate for the media server). If you have installed the media server without this, I would suggest starting again (unless you have other reasons to not do this).

To prepare for the installation - add the new media server name to the master server host properties in the servers section (either as an additional SERVER, or MEDIA_SERVER - there is a slight difference in functionality from the media server depending on what you choose here, the media server option will prevent some admin command from running from the media server).

Once you have added/installed the media server software, you should be able to view the new media server in the host properties -> media servers. If you connect to the media server (double click, or right click and select connect) you can verify that it does in fact connect from the master server.

It is not simple to change the media server hostname from the master (without Veritas/Cohesity services) - if it is new, it is probably simpler to restart the installation and be more careful when inputting the various hostnames.

    Cheers

  • Thanks David,

I think I will need to follow below steps:

    1. Uninstall the whole media server
    2. Fresh install media server to specify the correct media hostname

FYI, I have tried to reinstall without uninstall the current netbackup media and its drive me right through the setup without prompt to input media hostname (I believe it gets the hostname from previous config)

Also, is it practical to reinstall the whole media server just for the hostname changing?

For instance: we have an existing running media server, and we would like to rename it following our company new naming convention?

Would glad if you can share me the guide for that. Thank you!

      Hi jasonle

To add to the steps - after the uninstall, remove all the remaining folders/files from the installation directory (/usr/openv/* or \Program Files\Veritas\*).

For the media server rename - this requires specialist software that is not provided directly to customers. It requires professional services to run and operate. The software will take care of updating the other servers in the environment and update any associated storage servers running on the media server and updating the database on the master server.

On the other hand, if it is possible to decommission the media server (move all backups "owned" by the server to other media servers) then a reinstall can be done. DO NOT uninstall the media server if it is in active use and has unexpired backups (on tape and/or disk) - if you do it will cause untold problems for yourself.

      Cheers

Out of curiosity, is it not just editing the EMM config on the master with nbemmcmd?
