master/media servers on vmware

For one of our new data center we are going with physical servers, so we planned for SAN transport for ESX backups. Now we need to consider the best approach if master/media are also on vm's. Also, need the best practice on sizing master/media on vm's.

  • hi,

my recomendation is to keep the Master and Media servers in Physical hardware unless you go with very small setup.

you may end up with lot of perfrmance issues when you setup master and media in VM

see the "General guidelines for support" from the below DOC page number 2 , and also discuss about your infrastructure( size of data, number of clients, type of backup, type of storage etc) with symantec support before making a desission.

  • I agree with Nagalla. Please bear in mind that only disk storage units are supported on VM media servers. The same resource requirements for physical master and media servers will apply to virtual servers.
