Media Access port already contains media

Having a weird error every now and again over here, when ever I try to export tapes from my library (Spectralogic T120) I get the error,"Media Access port already contains media"

What's weird is that I'm able to update the inventory on the library and it displays correctly.

I ran a /scan and I see 9 MAP slots (WHICH IS WEIRD BECAUSE IT SHOULD ONLY HAVE 8)

Device Identifier: "SPECTRA PYTHON          91180056CF"

Device Type    : SDT_CHANGER

NetBackup Robot Type: 8

Removable      : Yes

Device Supports: SCSI-3

Number of Drives : 4

Number of Slots  : 95

Number of Media Access Ports: 9

Any ideas how I'd go about troubleshooting this ?

  • What is reported in scan, is 'sent' from the library, so if it's report 9 CAP / MAP slots, that is done to the library.

The question is, when it reports media in the CAP, is there ?  - I kinda presume not, else you woulnd;t be posting here, but had better ask just in case ...

The next time it happens, don't do anything, but run robtest from the robot control host - then type the command

    s p

.. and make a note of what it reports (s p is show ports, robtest calls the 'slots' in the CAP ports, just to confuse everyone).

Again, what is shown in robtest is 'sent' from the library.

NBU never runs an inventory itself, it only asks what do you have and where is it, and waits to be told.

This is not an attempt to be unhelpful, quite the opposite - the majority of people will blame NBU, even usually the manufacturers, but given my explanation above, NBU is actually the wrong place to look - we can't control what we are told basically.

That said, you could try ...

    1.  Reboot the library, sometimes fixes odd issues

    2.  Update the device mappings file (doubt it is this, but just occasioanlly this causes odd things to happen, and it does no harm to be at the latest level).

  • You could also run the mode command in robtest, this is not a NBU command, just a scsi command that is sent and will cause the robot to report what it has.

    Robot Selection
    ---------------
      1)  TLD 0
      2)  none/quit
    Enter choice: 1

    Robot selected: TLD(0)   robotic path = /dev/sg2

    Invoking robotic test utility:
    /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/tldtest -rn 0 -r /dev/sg2

    Opening /dev/sg2
    MODE_SENSE complete
Enter tld commands (? returns help information)
    mode
First transport addr = 256, Number transport elements = 1
First storage addr = 1024, Number storage elements = 30
First media access port addr = 512, Number media access port elements = 4  <<<<< HERE IT IS ;0)
First drive addr = 1, Number drive elements = 4
Library does have a barcode reader
    MODE_SENSE complete
