Media Server Hardware reqs

I am going to be building a new Media server for disk based backups. It is going to have 2 1GB NICs teamed on the public LAN, and routing all the backup traffic out 2 1GB NICs teamed on a private LAN. Both will be set up as Load Balanced.

What would be more important for a server like this, CPU or RAM?

  • It all depends on the disk you hang off the back of it. You dont mention HBA's?

I don't want to advertise on the forum, but it is going to be a DD560 on the private backup network that will be NFS mounted on the Media Server. It is capable of writing 133 MB/second. If you don't want to visit the link it is a data de-duplication appliance.
  • I would check in the NBU documentation as I am not sure if NBU is able to integrate with NFS devices as disk storage units (but I may be wrong). And the DD560 does not seem to be in the compatibility matrix: -

  • Good to hear.

Just check with Vertias to ensure you will be supported if you go ahead and use the DD560.
