Media was assigned a different media id after inventory robot, update configuration

Hi,

I have a tape that was offsited and needed for restore so I put back in the tape library. A00062 is the label of the tape but it was re-labled by inventroy robot to A00067 after I option update volume configuration on inventory robot. Does this mean the images on the tape got deleted? When I queried on the catalog - A00062, It still finds the details of the backup. How can it read the tape media id A00062 and restore its contents?

Thank you

  • To avoid this, when you inventory the robot use vmphyinv, this reads each tape header to avoid the situation you have.

I'm thinking you don't have barcodes on your tapes (A***) is the default media ID  for tapes without barcodes).

NBU is not designed to work without barcodes, it can, but is 'hard work' - suggest upgrading to a library with a barcode reader.

  • No it is not deleted, proving you don't relabel it manually.

Simply, change the barcode manually for this media:

    vmchange -h <EMM server>  -barcode  <new_barcode> -m media_id

  • Unlabelled media?

If so, you should ONLY perform a normal Inventory from the GUI when you put NEW tapes in the robot.

When you re-enter previously used media, NBU has no idea because there is no label on the tapes and therefore assumes that you are adding new media.

You must use vmphyinv to run a physical inventory.
This will load each tape into a drive, read the internal label and update NBU with tape location.

Read up in NBU Admin Guide I about using media without barcodes and vmphyinv.

PLEASE purchase labels for your tapes.
Without labels, you are turning media management into a manual process...

  • Hi mph999 / Marianne,

Will do the vmphyinv. We are on the process of having a barcode label of our tapes currently. The default tape label A**** was an old tape before.

    Will update you soon.

    Thank you both.

  • When you put new labels on these old tapes, please start a new discussion before doing that...

We will help you to 'marry' the internal and external label.
