Migration og Backup images between domains

Dear Experts,

We have two Netbackup domains with the following specification:

Domain one:

Master server OS: RHEL 8.10

Master server NBU version : 9.1.0.1

Media servers: Two NBU appliances , model 5340, version 4.1.0.1

Domain two specifications:

Master server OS : RHEL 7.9

Master server NBU version: 8.2

Media servers: 2 Netbackup appliances, model 5240, nbu version 8.2

Problem statement: we need to decomission Domain two, but the images on domain two having 10 years retention.

Query:

  1. Can we migrate these LTR images from Domain two to domain one? as there are difference in versions...
  2. If yes, what would be the best method for migration? via replication or duplication?
  3. If any restore request comes in the future, will we be able to restore from domain one?

Please provide guidance on the process and any consideration we need to take into account

    Unfortunately, it is not a supported operation. Meaning that the procedure is not in the manuals, and you will not get support from Veritas.

    In the past, I transferred images for two of my customers successfully. Check out the following two topics:. 
    Note that although the images will be transferred successfully, the replication job may fail at the end. You have to do your tests and checks.

      Will the replication work from 8.2 to 9.1.0.1? and having different model of appliances ?

      and do we need to replicate through command only? can't we replicate it through SLP?

      If i go with Replication option.. do i need to create a trust relationship with  masters and add the opposite master certificate to your media servers. i dont want to configure Storage servers as they are already configured?

    there is no problem going from a lower version to higher. From Higher to lower is working for most backup types but it is not recommended.
    And there is no problem replication between any netbackup appliance or MSDP BYO servers. 

    You can not use SLPs. SLP works only with backups not with existing images.

      This is the first time i am setting up AIR from scratch. Can you please share the technote that covers all the required for execution steps? Likje

      1. Trust relationship setup
      2. Deploying certificates at the storage server of the source domain
      3. Setting up MSDP replication target
      4. Only these ports are required to be open i.e., 1556, 10082 and 10102

      1556 :  Needs to be open between ( source and target master server)
      10082 : Needs to be open between source NBU appliance to target NBU appliance
      10102 : Needs to be open between source NBU appliance to target NBU appliance

      Additionally, can we migrate images from 8.2 to 10.3.0.1? i am asking because in 10.3.0.1 , the Netbackup database has been changed from Sybase to MYSQL.

    the AIR is pretty simple, just follow up any available  guide availble on blogs.
    Regarding the change in netbackup DB , that is a component change only the design is still the same so you will be fine.
