Minor or Major version upgrade.

Is it minor version upgrade is like upgrading from NBU 7.0 to 7.0.1.?

And is it major version upgrade is like NBU 7.0.1 to NBU 7.1?

If we have the clustered master then How to identify which node we have to upgrade first (passive then active / active then passive)?

  • Hi,

Your understanding is correct. Please refer to the release notes, installation manual for the specific version you choose to upgrade to, it will have special instructions for cluster upgrades.

  • I'm not sure that's entirely accurate, Riann...

    MAJOR releases are always "point-oh" releases - 5.0, 6.0, 7.0.

    MINOR releases are "dot" releases - 5.1, 6.5, 7.1.

    So, for example:

An upgrade from 6.x to 7.x would be considered a major upgrade.  (What's BEFORE the dot changes)

An upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1 would be considered a minor upgrade.  (What's AFTER the dot changes)

Releases such as 6.5.6 or 7.0.1 ("double dot") are release updates and applying them would be just like applying a maintenance pack in the olden days, as opposed to a minor upgrade.

And lest I forget, sometimes you can apply a hotfix ("triple dot") on top of a release update - right now, our only example of THAT was our NetBackup 6.5.3.1 hotfix.

More information on what's what can be found at the "Release Details" page for NBU:

    NetBackup Enterprise Server Release Details

    Hope this helps!

  • Thanks for the clarification.

And if we have master server in clustered environment then how the upgrade needs to be performed.

    Is it always like:

If a minor version upgrade – then the upgrade master servers:  passive then active?

If a major version upgrade – then the upgrade master servers:  active then passive?

    • Please advice.
  • ALWAYS Active node first, then passive node.

As per Riaan's post, the documentation for the relevant versions contains cluster upgrade info.

All the download links for 7.0.1 can be found here: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH139088

The URL's on this page will take you to the README / Installation instructions for your master server OS version.

For 7.1, all documentation can be found here: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH154178

Upgrade info can be found in the Installation Guides - there is one for Unix and one for Windows.
