NAS BACKUP

Hi All,

I have a NAS device. Need to take backup of this NAS device. I have some query.

1:- Should i need NDMP license to take netbackup?

2:- we have mapped a nas drive in windows machine(Netbackup Client Installed) and one in unix(Netbackup Client Installe) so what should be the best approach to take backup?

Pls share whitepapes Best practise for CIFS/NFS share backup  

 

MY Environment is 

Master:- 7.0 Netbackup with windows 2008 server

Client:- one Unix machine and one windows machine.

    Three-way NDMP is possible only if you have another NAS and it has its own tape drives. If you don't have, forget it.

    Last one, Remote NDMP. Use tape drives or disks attached to media server as backup destination. I believe this is only option you can choose.

    So,

    You will use the NDMP license when you want to backup directly from your NAS, it when you have shares using the CIFS protocol. As for mounted volumes with either NFS or SAN (FCP), you will use the normal Netbackup Client that you have in Unix machines and Windows because, for Netbackup, this volume is a local volume on server.

    There are other ways to perform these backups however will depend on the technology of your storage, but in practice the aforementioned are the most used.

    We do both ways here in the company, the backup via NDMP it use on our Fileserver which is mounted directly on Storage, does not have a server as an intermediary.

    If you are in 7.5 and have deduplication license, give a try to backup with NFS or CIFS with accelerator.

    I some cases is NDMP killer...

    What is your NAS device? If it does not support the NDMP protocol then you will need to back it up via the clients attached to it as per the earlier advice

    But, if you do not have a NDMP license and you use to share CIFS directly from Storage, you can back up this share using a windows machine pointing to this share, like a UNC Path.

    Not is the best way, but works. Only if you dont have the NDMP license.

    My Setup is as below.

     

    MY Environment is 

    Master:- 7.0 Netbackup with windows 2008 server with NDMP license.

    Client:- one Unix machine and one windows machine.

    NAS device:- IBM N3300 V2, V3 and V4 supported.

    One standalone Tape drive is attached to Master Server.

    Need to take NAS Drive backup. Pls suggest me the best way.

    was going through the NAS Guide and Found three options But got confused which one suits here.
     
    Backups can be conducted in any of the following ways:
     
    ■ NDMP local backup
     
    ■ NDMP three-way back up
     

    ■ Backup to a Media Manager storage unit on the NetBackup server
