NBU 11.0.0.1 - Server 22 - Activity Monitor fails, but works if I switch pages in the Admin Console

NBU 11.0.0.1, Windows Server 2022 Standard, separate master and media server, backup to LTO tapes in a robot, clients are various Windows Server versions.

This problem occurred after upgrading from 9.something to 11.0 and remains after upgrading to 11.0.0.1.

When I open Netbackup Administration Console and then go to the Activity Monitor I get the following error:

The Activity Monitor failed because of
Connection to bpjobd daemon on server esbc3401 failed with the following error:
vrts.vss.sdk.at.exception.VRTSAtException: Unexpected VxAT Error.
For more details, refer to the log files.

(esbc3401 is our master server)

But if I switch to another page such as Device Monitor or Media, then back to Activity Monitor, it works. That aspect is what I've not seen when previous people have reported the same or similar error.

We're using legacy logging. I've checked a few of the logs but didn't find anything helpful.

Anyone got any ideas? For a start, which logs are the most important to look at?

  • Hello

Is this for java GUI or WEBUI? Depending in which you are facing issue try the same in the other.

This is in the Java GUI. A quick check in the web UI doesn't show a similar error there. (We don't normally use the web UI).

  • Well, I have seen this behavior a few times in the past. Not with version 11, as I have not installed it anywhere.
My thought was that I was too quick to select Activity Monitor right after launching Java, and that I need to wait a few seconds after opening Java before selecting Activity Monitor.

  • I have seen this behavior for multiple of our clients (after upgrading to 10.5.0.1 and later).
I suggest you stop using java GUI and start using web UI.(support tried to find out the root cause with enabling debug but it was of no use)
from version 11 onward everything is available in webUI and you should start using it as soon or later java GUI will be removed.

I dare you to try search for client within Policies or perform any activity on more than one object within WebUI at the same time.  Same for Storage group managment.

WebUI while nice to look at does not offer the same level of convenience than JAVA did.  You always end up running commands in cmdline or API calls for things that JAVA did natively.

  • You can enable bjobd logs to get more details and also check if you have certificate errors somewhere in the logs..

this is known error message that we encountered many times before and each time the solution was different.

as stated before.. java console is going to stop soon and everything is on webui.. so I suggest to start working on it to get used to it

    best of luck
