NBU 7.6.0.1 for vCloud Director and Clients selection

Hi All,

I configured a NBU 7.6.0.1 to use the credentials of a vCloud Director (load balancer). Now I'm configuring a "VMware" policy. Everything seems OK, except for the clients selection tab. I followed the Adm.Guide_VMware, page 192 etc. "for vCloud Director", and I got stuck somehwre in the middle.

The issue is this: I build a very simple query: vCDvApp Contains "nbuvcdtest" (Basic mode[1]). I can choose from the list that the "Load Values" button provides me with, but after pressing the Test Query button I get an error, after having to wait for an endless minute: VM retrieval failed, server = [vcdcv]., nbu status = 1, severity = 1.

[1] vmware:/?filter=vCDvApp Contains "nbuvcdtest" in Advanced mode.

I've tried to keep the infrastructure as simple as possible: Only one NBU Master/Media server, nbu and not hotadd, vCloud Director with a vCloud infrastructure, including vApps and VMs inside those, of course.

What am I missing here? I humbly believe this is not a FW issue, since I could add the credentials for this vCloud director without problems (TCP/443 is open).

    We get the below Error when we fire backup of the Server.

    =>Cause

    A customer who alters the default 'VCD public REST API base URL with a sub directory (https://vcloud.customer.com/xxx for example) will lose the ability for vCloud to connect to its own API.


    Solution

    The VCD public REST API base URL should not be altered or reconfigured. It should be left in it's default 'https://vcloud.customer.com' configuration.

    Hi sri vani,

    Many thanks for your answer. We tried that with no success, unfortunately.

    What we did was leave the "VCD public REST API base URL" blank, re-add the credentials for the vCloud director (load balancer), restart NBU and run Test Query again. The result is the same (plz see attached screen shot in file VM_retrieval_failed.JPG).

    Might be a case sensitive issue.

    I found a similar issue in our forum for 7.6 plz have a look it and give it a try

    Hi Sri,

    I had come accross that page before. I checked with the vCloud administrator, and all names appear in small caps.

    More details on this:

    Master server: nbuvcdtest.

    Media server and access host: nbuvcdtest-2.

    Both nbuvcdtest and nbuvcdtest-2 belong to the same network (no FW rules needed between them).

    FW rules in place to allow TCP/443 from both nbuvcdtest and nbuvcdtest-2 to the vCloud Director.

    FW rules in place to allow TCP/902 from nbuvcdtest-2 to the underlying ESX hosts.

    I'm taking a closer look now at the logs. Will come back.

    "Select from list", when building the query for the policy, works. However, Test Query still gives the same error. How come?

    This is the query: vmware:/?filter=vCDvApp Equal "nbuvcdtest".

    I created the bpfis lof directory in our Media server / Backup Host and launched again the Test Query. It failed as usual, but I got this in the bpfis log:

    I'm assuming now that what NetBackup does is simulate the start of a backup. At the same time, I wonder how can this text give those "Non-fatal method error" and still finish saying the the operation was successfully completed.

    Hi sri,

    We did as suggested by you. First, with the load balancer URL, having that host in the Virtual Machine Servers list, but the Test Query failed. Then, with each of the cells separatelly, and the result was the same.

    I thank you a lot for helping, sri. It's really appreciated.

    In parallel to these tests, I'm struggling to have my Symantec account fixed. I'll open a case the soonest I can. Not that I'm going to give up trying in the meantime, of course.
