NBU 7.6.1, vSphere 6 and NFS 4.1 support

Hello,

We are setting up a new vSphere 6.0 infrastructure with new NetApp NFS volumes (array is a 8060 in cDot 8.3) mounted with NFS 4.1.

So I have added my new VC in NBU. Then I tried to backup a VM on my new Datastore and got the error:

Error nbpem(pid=24969226) Invalid, unsupported or disconnected datastores for VM name = [VM_NAME], server = [vCenter Name], datastore(s) = [My NFS 4.1 Datastore]

I tried to back up a VM on a local ESX datastore and here it's working perfectly.

So did anyone succeed to back up VMs on vSphere 6 running on NFS v4.1? Is it supported? Found nothing is the documentation.

Thanks for your help or feedback.

Renaud

Spec:

NBU master 7.6.1 in AIX

NBU medias 7.6.1 on Windows 2008 R2

vCenter 6.0 in 2012 R2

  • My understanding is that Symantec hasn't itemized supported datastores, so there is no way of knowing this information officially. NFS 4.1 support was new to VSphere 6, right? NBU 7.6.1.1 is running with V.D.D.K 5.5.4. Maybe they need to upgrade to V.D.D.K 6.0 before they can support the new datastore or something. Based on the errors you posted, I think you are correct in thinking that NFS 4.1 is not supported yet, but I suspect it will be in the future. I'm wondering if you can get into the 7.7 beta program just to see if the NFS 4.1 support is there.

  • You need to be on NBU 7.6.1.1 for vSphere 6.0 support.

Extract from Statement of Support for NetBackup 7.x in a Virtual Environment: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH127089

Notes on support for vSphere 6.0
NetBackup 7.6.1.1 adds support for vSphere 6.0, using VDDK 5.5.4.

NBU for VMware has always supported NFS datastores, but NBU documentation does not list NFS version.
I guess yo will need to check VMware compatibility guides.

Which Transport method did you select for VMs on NFS datastores?

  • Hi Marianne,

    Thanks for you reply.

    We are in 7.6.1.1 sorry.

    I tried the following.

Backup a VM on a local datastore --> OK

Move the VM to the NFS 4.1 Datastore and restarted the backup --> Failed

    With the following error:

Info bpbrm(pid=5940) INF - virtLogger: Virtual machine is on an unsupported datastore type, NFS41.FTL - VMware_freeze: VIXAPI freeze (VMware snapshot) failed with 99: SYM_VMC_OPERATION_NOT_SUPPORTED

So I guess NFS 4.1 is NOT supported by NBU, which is really strange as VMware backup with nbd tansport modes is using the network and shoult not care about datastore type.

No way to have an official document from Symantec to know if this is supported or not? NFS 4.1 is fully supported by VMware.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Matt,

I openned a case yesterday to Symantec support as I was not able to find any info in documentation and the answer is:

NFS 4.1 will be supported only from netbackup 7.7 onwards.
Netbackup 7.7 is slated to be released July-August this year.

Regarding the the beta program, do you know the process to participate?

    Many thanks.

  • I don't know the process to get in, sorry! Maybe someone else can chime in. I'm pretty sure they aren't supporting 7.7 Beta to 7.7 GA upgrades for this release. I'm not sure about 7.7 Beta to future GA/patch releases, so the only way to get off of the beta might be to reinstall completely. It also isn't recommended to put the beta releases in production.
