NBU Media Server or SAN Media Server?

I have a remote office and "administrator" who is getting status 159's which tells him he's out of licenses.  I can't remote into his server but I'm almost positive he setup his media server as a SAN media server which would explain the errors.  Is there someplace on the media server that would tell him it's a SAN media server?  Or is there somewhere in the admin console that will tell me?

Thanks,
Randy

On each SAN media server a Shared Storage Option license should be registered to enable the SSO feature (ie to make it a SAN media server). So if you believe this to be incorrect he should unregister it./remove it. But only after any devices that have been registered to be shared on this 'SAN media server' have been decomissioned - so you dont get your config in a mess.

This is taken from the Shared Storage Device Guide. Found here
    ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/00_index.htm
Also maybe look into the Device Configuration guide for help in setting up as a media server.

Also for info, a SAN media server can only be configured/setup from the master server - so unless your 'admin' person has access to the master nb admin console, you might be going down the wrong path.

  • Also check the primary license key installed on the Media Server. A San Media Server license key (pre 6.5) or Enterprise Client license key will certainly make it a San Media server.
If it's Windows run bpminlicense on the ser ver. If Unix, run get_license_key.
Please get the Administrator to collect and send you the output.
Please post the output here - we will help to confirm whether correct license keys were installed.

Is this a difnitive test?  There's a lot of smack talk going on and now there's money riding on the outcome.
  • First SSO is not required for SAN Media servers - unless you ARE share storage devices with other media servers.

On your master check your licensing to verify you have the license installed for the SAN media server.

On your policy - if the SAN media server is the Storage unit you have chosen... then verify that you have NO OTHER clients in that policy - A SAN Media server can only backup itself and no other servers.
  • Apologies Randy - you need to run bpminlicense with '-list_keys -verbose'. That will give description of each license key as well.
The definitive answer is your license key certificate for this server. What does that say?

  • Here ya go . . .what am I looking for?

  • Randy, I suggest that you get hold of your Symantec reseller ASAP.
You seem to have a mix of NetBackup Server and NetBackup Enterprise Server license keys. Do the license keys and features correspond with your license key certificates?

NetBackup Server is a 2-tier architechture that consists of a single Master/Media server and network clients.
NetBackup Enterprise Server is a 3-tier architecture with Master Server, Media server(s) and clients.

The license keys that that reflect 'NetBackup Server' could be a 'red herring' as one of them is your SSO license key, which is only supported with NetBackup Enterprise Server. I see that you also have a VTL option - this license key is capacity based. So, it is possible that the capacity has been exceeded.
You do have a proper Server license key on this Media server (not SAN Media server or Enterprise Client).

Best if you contact your reseller or Symantec Licensing.
  • The remote client license was not installed.  The keys I sent you were from my SAN Media server and I had all of the correct keys.  I just needed to know which one to look for since I don't have access to his server.  He told me he was getting a "license use has been exceeded error".  I thought  that not having the remote client license would tell you that the remote option wasn't installed but I guess it also generates the "exceeded" error.  Live and learn.

But thank you all for your quick responses.
