NBU Windows 2012 Client & WinSxS directory...

Hi,

a customer told me about the amount of data on his Win2012 server where NBU client 7.5.0.7 was freshly installed. After the first full I noticed that there are around 14 GB missing... We found out that the saved directory /Windows/WinSxS is empty in the backup image. Ok, these are kind of hard links but the directory is rather empty in the backup image. So... is it a feature or a bug? What is the trick to save the WinSxS directory or should it be left out?

The server is running Solaris 10 with NBU 7.1...

Another question: the customer cannot list the backed up files with his NBU-client using the GUI. The message in the log-file tells:

"/usr/openv/netbackup/db/error/log_1393282800:1393339210 1 32 16 hellboy 0 0 0 frankfurt bpdbm requestor frankfurt is not a valid server for query 223"

hellboy is our backup server, frankfurt is the client... so i think the error exists because of the version mix??? ( server still 7.1, client 7.5.0.7 )

Thanks in advance,

Andreas

looks like file browse option is not set in client attributes.

check in Master server GUI--> host properities-> Master server --> client attributes.--> find frankfurt  and check allow file browse is enabled...

    and for WinSxS

could you pleaase enable the bpbkar log in client with VERBOSE 5 and try to backup only WinSxS folder and attach the log to this post.

  • Having a 7507 client to a 71 server is a possible problem - this isn't an officially supported configuration. Re skipped folder, see this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb891959(v=vs.85).aspx What is in your "FilesNotToBackup" registry key in your Windows client?

Totally unsupported as pointed out above.

Client can be higher patch level, but not higher version or release.
    See
    Version Compatibility TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH29677

So, master and media server used to backup this client must be upgraded to 7.5.0.x ASAP.
    (Best to upgrade to 7.5.0.7.)

If problem persists after upgrade, please let us know what is specified in Backup Selection and post Client's bpbkar log as File attachment.
Also check NetBackup Client service Logon account. The default is LocalSystem and may not have sufficient permissions to access all files and folders.
The other possibility is that Windows may be seeing this folder as part of Shadow Copy Components. Verbose bpbkar log will confirm.

    ** EDIT **

About the error when trying to browse/list on the client, check Client Attributes setting on the master server.

There is a global 'Allow client browse' box at the top of the screen, or can be set at client level by adding client names in Client Attributes.
