ndmp_data_get_state_failed, status = 18 (NDMP_XDR_DECODE_ERR)

Hi Guys,

I am getting "ndmp_data_get_state_failed, status = 18 (NDMP_XDR_DECODE_ERR)" everytime i am trying to perform NDMP backup using NBU.

I searched the forum and found this thread "ndmpdatagetstatefailed-status-18-ndmpxdrdecodeerr" very similar to the error that i am getting but the suggested solution is very product specific so it doesn't help me and also I am not using "EMC ISILON".

Setup Details:

  • NDMP Client: HP specific file storage solution (running NDMP server)
  • DMA: Symantec NBU 7.6.0.3 on Win2k8R2 Server (with Jumbo frames disabled)
  • Backup Data: 5 TB of radom generated data with very large number of small files (81540000 files)

 

Intrestingly ndmp backup fails everytime after backing up around 240 GB of data (tried thrice).

    Exact model and exact firmware (O/S) version and patch level of the HP NDMP device?

    Is it listed in the HCL?

    I don't think it would be listed in the HCL its a new product (the provided link doesn't work for me).

    The HP NDMP device is based on "CentOS release 6.4 (Final)"

    Still need exact model and firmware details, as someone else may know something specific that could help you. Have you tried to find the HCL? And checked it? It could be that your device has certain restrictions.

    Link works for me.

    You need to take a look at NDMP client. The NDMP client should have a message/error log that should assist you in resolving the error. Match time stamps.

    Basically Netbackup say something went wrong, but it can't say what went wrong because its the NDMP device that do the data transfer and not netbackup.

    NDMP is unfortunately not that intelligent.
