Need an advise on Backup strategy for long term retention

Hi Team,

I'm relatively new to NetBackup and Need advise on the back strategy for long term retention backups.

Below is our environment:

We have 2 Sites - SITE A and SITE B. Each Site is having One master(physical server), 2 media servers(physical servers) and Data Domain 9410. We are planning to install NetBackup version 10.4.

Our requirement is as below :

-> backing up to Data Domain with 1 month retention

-> replicate the data to Site B from Site A.

-> Duplicate to Azure Blob store for long term retention(13 months retention). This should happen monthly once.

We want the data to be moved to cloud through media server. We don't want this at DD level.

So my question is what backup strategy(backup method) we need to follow in order to move the last 1 month data to Azure Blob store once in a month? We have VADP backups, SQL backups, NDMP Backups and file level backups. We want to move the data cloud monthly once and that copy should have last 1 month. Please suggest.

Also, please suggest any other better ways to achieve this. We don't have Cloud Tier license at Data Domain level, so that is not an option.

  • This is a pretty classic configuration using Storage Lifecycle Policies (SLP).  The basic process to set this up would look like this:

    • Establish a primary server trust between the domains (follow these steps for both primary servers)
      • Click on the sprocket in upper right hand corner of web UI
      • Select Global Security - > Trusted Primary Servers
      • Click on +Add and follow steps.  You'll need a security token from the other primary server.
    • On Site A primary server, create a cloud storage unit
      • To keep is simple, you could create a classic cloud connector storage unit (add a disk storage server of type Cloud Connector).  The Azure blob storage costs won't be too bad.  Each TiB will cost about $3.69 per month on Azure blob Archive tier (current East US 2 pricing listed at $0.0036 per GB).  The annual cost per TB would be about $44.24.
    • On Site A primary server, create a SLP that has the following steps
      • Import
        • Duplicate to cloud storage unit
NOTE:  this is indented because you'll add a child to the above import
    • On Site B primary server, create a SLP that has the following steps
      • Backup
        • Replicate to site A primary server
NOTE:  same logic here as in above step
    • Create backup policy with a 1 month schedule at Site B that uses the above SLP

One very important comment here:  this may not work to your satisfaction because the Data Domain may not be able to keep up with the duplication process to the cloud in Site A.  Almost every customer that I've worked with has had major issues with the Data Domain attempting to rehydrate all those backup images to be sent to the cloud.

We are talking about how much data here, if it huge you should consider cloud catalyst for moving data to cloud.
for moving backup to azure ,site B (or any type of backup, duplication, replicaiton)the recommended way is SLP.it makes life much easier, you can control(via window) when you want the operation to take place.
you need to remember when you are using SLP, it will hold the backup images, unless it acheives what it has been told to do.
for example, it will not release the one month data, unless it duplicates them to cloud.otherwise it will not allow them to be expired (deleted).

BTW, why you need to send them only once a month?how much is the size of one month backup in your environment?
