Net backup, Backup As a service

Hi All,

We have a customer has a virtuall and physical servers, the customer needs to have a complete backup soultion, enable each customer to manage his backup in a seperate console [ Create, Edit, Re schedule, Delele, Monitore his jobs], the customer servers, could be virtual or physical ones.

my questions, Can we offer them Netbackup ? what are the required Licenses, if we offer them per Tera ? How Netbackup will handle the issue of enabling each customer manage his jobs ?

if We implement one Master and for each customer Media Server, does this duable to enable eachcustomer create new jobs, and manage jobs ?

How manay Media Server is Free for each Master Server ?

Also the customer Need To Manage all the Customers Jobs, How we owill implement This ?

Your advise is highlly appreciated.

  • As per my previous post - you cannot limit each user/customer to only see his own policies/jobs/etc.

The user that is granted access will be able to see all jobs/policies/data backed up by ALL clients/systems and be able to restore any system's data to any other system.

If this is not desirable, you will have to manage all clients' environments without giving access to any of them ,or else have a separate master for each with own set of license keys and dedicated access.

  • Please define 'each customer'?

Will these be end users? Server owners? Different companies?

The problem with access is that you cannot limit each user/customer to only see his own policies/jobs/etc.
The user that is granted access will be able to see all jobs/policies/data backed up.
Different access levels can be granted at user or group level if NBU Access Control is deployed.

All Agents and Options (including media servers) are free with Capacity Based license.
With Per Server license, only the Master's license includes media server license for itself. Each media server needs separate Enterprise Server (or Enterprise Client) license.

Licensing requirements are explained in NetBackup Licensing Guide - download from PartnerNet.

  • Thanks Alot for your response Marianne,

each customer : It is different companies and the servers owners, servers could be physical or virtual.

Is it possible to implement Netbackup to achieve the customer requirments ?

    with any senario or licenses?

    Thanks In advance.

  • You could sell backup as a service, where it's your'e company that operate the backup environment(s) for the customers. That will work quite nice :-D

  • Hi Layth

Propose them Capacity based module with DeDupe. DeDupe benefits alot in Virtual environment.

As far opeartion is concerned, I bet Symantec NetBackup OpsCenter would win here. With Capacity based module analytics is cross graded hence no need to buy it seperately. Create custom views based on Server owners or Application owners or Companies etc. (For more details read OpsCenter Admin guide or search for opscenter content on partner net or symiq.

Just to highlight with opscenter you can only manage existing NBU domain. Actual operation has to be done by NBU console only, and presently NBU console does offers same flexibility of creating seperate view levels based on NBAC or similar to opscenter. Opscenter cannot create new policies, but can execute manual backup job from existing policy. Hence decide strategy accordingly.

As nicolai stated. If you do not want customer to play with NBU console, Serve them as backup service and provide OpsCenter access using which they can monitor and pull reports do analysis etc.

More over you can tell them benefit of Auto image replication within NBU , if they have DR site they are on good side ;-)

    Hope this helps

  • Using OpsCenter Views I can grant access to specific polices for specfic users, but as you said captain the users can just view and manual run the policies but they will not be able to create or modify policies. The only way to perform this is install a separate master for each customer to manage his machines as Marianne said. the VMs size around 20 TB for all customers, I need to confirm that the capacity edition license will allow to install as many as I want Master Servers without any additional cost.

Then can I manage all master servers using Administration console?

    Many Thanks to All

  • I need to confirm that the capacity edition license will allow to install as many as I want Master Servers without any additional cost.

It all depends on WHO is holding the license keys - you or your customers?
I believe if your company is holding the license keys, you can have as many Masters as you like.
I must add here that this my personal interpretation of licensing needs.

You MUST double-check with your local SE and/or Symantec Licensing department.

You can use Ops Center to monitor multiple masters, but to config anything, you need 1 Admin Console instance per master.
