NetBackup 7.1 / Exchange 2007 - individual mailbox backups. POSSIBLE?

setup:

  • NetBackup version 7.1.0.2
  • Master Server:  Windows 2008 R2
  • Media Server (only) :  NetBackup 5200 Appliance version 2.0.2
  • Exchange 2007
  • NetBackup Administrator:  version 0.0.1  -- new and clueless

Sometimes for some legal action, we need to back up just a couple of mailboxes and keep the contents till the lawyers say it's OK to delete.  No problem with our old backup solution (DataProtector), but I have no idea how to accomplish this with NetBackup.

I know i want to do a MAPI backup, but I have no idea how to specify individual mailboxes, the only mailbox directive seems to get all of them.  What am I missing?  Should there be a way to specify only one or two mailboxes, not all of them?  (we have about 2000, and I'm thinking that kind of MAPI backup would take forever).

Also, GRT is out, since our only media server is a 5200, which is equivalent to "PureDisk" which you can't use for GRT.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  • Just open the policy - go to backup selections and rather than select the little hand (directive button) select the folder button and then see if you can browse down into you exchange server as far as mailboxes

  • In the backup selections just use one of the following depending on how your mailboxes are named:

    Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes:\John Smith [jsmith]\*

    or

    Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes:\JSmith*

You may find that you can actually browse to the mailbox itself on the selections tab and select it

  • This worked, just as you said !!  I typed in exactly

    "Microsfot Exchange Mailboxes:\Lynne Seamans\*"

made sure my mailbox was on the client I had listed and it's running !!  VERY EASY, thank you :)

Now, you had a teaser about browsing mailboxes.  Any clue how that might be done?

  • Thank you!  That worked exactly as advertised also...  I'm good to go with Individual Mailbox backups :)
