Netbackup 7.5.0.4 - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise dedupe media server

With one master controlling multiple media servers (all with same OS as Master):

This is a brand new configuration. No policies are created, and I'm just starting the configuration. The end goal is one master controls 12 media servers that runs de-dupe and pushes images to tape for storage. All media servers are being presented a drive with local drive letter that is 3 TB in size from iSCSI Initiator via SAN.

I ran the 'configure disk storage servers" wizard under media / device management, and added an MSDP pool that is controlled by media server 1.

I did not finish  / complete the wizard for defining disk pools. My question is: after adding this MSDP pool, am I supposed to see this in the Master admin console? In the Media Server admin console? I cant see it anywhere, and it finisihed successfully. Do I need to define a disk pool before this is visible?

If each media server will have a tape drive attached, is this set up in the Master admin console? Seems the media server admin console is basically blank, except for listing my Master server.

If I'm only using the new du-dupe pool to run de-dupe, does it still need to be a part of disk storage, as the only technical storage will be on tape?

    I suppose you have configured storage server for MSDP but exited from wizard before creating Disk Pool. You can see storage servers in [Media and Device MaNagement]-[credentials]-[storage server] in NetBackup Administration Console connected to the master server. You can continue from creating Disk Pool from [Media and Device MaNagement]-[Devices]-[Disk Pools]. Click 'New' button and follow the instructions on the wizard. In general, all administrative operations in GUI should be done on the master server. Don't connect to media servers. To configure tape devices, go through "Configure Storage Devices" wizard.

    Yasuhisa - your response is very helpful. I have completed the wizard. This makes much more sense.

    So in Master server, I create all policies, and in defining the policies, I will specify the correct media server / disk pool (i.e. the drive shared to the local media server that is set up as msdp pool).

     

    The media servers will accept backup image, run de-dupe, then put image where I tell it to go (tape drive). So basically the media server is a seperate guy (meaning, I will generally never log into him except to update host file)?

     

    In the environment I want to create, is it better to create initial policies for testing, or to start out initially buildling everything through SLP? Or is SLP only available after creating policies? Just wanting to be clear, so sorry if these are basic questions. Again, thanks for your help.

    Also, last question - if I am building a new Master, and want to start testing with a client that is currently backing up to a different Master, what would be best option?

     

    Keep client backing up to both? possible? as long as their windows dont overlap? current master is 7.0. new master is 7.5.0.4. Client software is 7.0

    Disable client on old master, add on new master?

    You can go straight to what you want; if you have no trouble in your environment, and everything works fine, you don't need to create test policies. Otherwise, if you have trouble, you may need to create and run test policies to isolate problem.

    SLP can be configured before creating backup policies. It is better to configure SLP before creating policies. Change for SLP does not take effect against backups which is already running or done.

    Possible with standard file backups by adding all master and media servers into client's server list. But does not work with some sort of non-standard backups like BMR and DBs. it is better to avoid window overlap - especially on windows client.
