This is a MAINTENANCE Release for NetBackup (as opposed to a Release Update) - it can be applied on top of NetBackup 7.6 GA or any 7.6.0.x.  (If you are currently running 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1, 7.1.0.x, 7.5 OR 7.5.0.x, you will need to upgrade to 7.6 GA before you can apply 7.6.0.4.)

  • Hi Chris,

Can you explain why we see this in the release notes? (It happened with 7.5.0.7 too if I recall)

"If you are running NetBackup 7.6 and do not plan to upgrade to version 7.6.1 (including the 5330 appliance) within the first calendar quarter of 2015, Symantec recommends that you upgrade to version 7.6.0.4 to take advantage of the latest bug fixes and compatibility features.

In this scenario, your suggested upgrade path from NetBackup 7.6.0.4 is to a release in the NetBackup 7.6.1 maintenance line (triple-dot) available in the first calendar quarter of 2015. Symantec will publicly declare the maintenance release that provides the recommended upgrade path when that software is released to manufacturing (RTM).

If you are running NetBackup 7.6 and plan to upgrade to version 7.6.1 (including the 5330 appliance) within the first calendar quarter of 2015, then Symantec recommends that you do not install the NetBackup 7.6.0.4 maintenance release in your environment."

  • Hi Riann,

It looks like, just like when some 7.5.0.7 fixes didn't make it into 7.6.0.1 but did make it into 7.6.0.2, there are some 7.6.0.4 fixes which won't have made it into 7.6.1 and if you're depending on them, you'll need to ask us about an EEB or just wait for (I expect) 7.6.1.1.

I hadn't heard about any concerns going from 7.6.0.4 to 7.6.1, though, although I guess it makes sense.  Last time, we had 7.5.0.7 and 7.6.0.1 out so closely together I guess it wasn't as big a deal when we made a similar statement ("if you're at 7.5.0.6, maybe don't apply 7.5.0.7 if you're going to 7.6 GA" was what I think the TechNote said) and...actually, I'll just link it here:

About upgrade paths to the NetBackup 7.6 line of releases
     http://symantec.com/docs/TECH210461

It sounds like maybe we should expect a similar document about 7.6.1 when the time comes?  (Although it may not have any more info than the blurb you've already extracted from the Release Notes...)

It's also interesting that it looks like we're promising 7.6.1 and 7.6.1.1 in the same quarter next year - I wonder if that's really going to happen.  That'd be pretty exciting, if true!

  • I miss the days when I was the guinea pig and would update my environment as soon as an update was available.

  • I remember!!

And in the meantime 7.6.1 'sneaked in' without any big announcement....

  • Seems like most TNs cannot be opened today....

One of our Symantec friends has reported this.
