Netbackup Catalog Migration from Physical to Virtual

Hello All,

we are planning to migrate our Netbaclkup master server from Physical to Virtual one and would like to seek your guidance on it.

Currently our setup consist of :

Netbackup master server: BYO server

OS: RHEL 8.10

NBU version 10.3.0.1

Four media servers:

Two media servers are appliance, model 5340 and NBU version 10.3.0.1

Two media server: BYO servers( also configured as a robot control host)

OS version: RHEL 8.10

NBU version : 10.3.0.1

Given that the Netbackup database has transitioned from sybase to SQL, could you please confirm whether it is possible to migrate Catalog from Physical to virtual server?if so, can i continue to follow the same technote for the Migration procedure under version 10.3.0.1.

How to use catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between UNIX or Linux master servers as part of a hardware refresh (veritas.com)

Server migration to new hardware by recovering the catalog (veritas.com)

BR,

  • Hello

I think you are good to go.

I would also explored this avenue of achieving your goal:

  • Is this method is good or Catalog recovery method is good? This method looks quite lengthy

  • Everything depends, and I can't tell you which is the best for you...

There are too many factors to be taken into consideration.

      Hi kak4

If you do a simple physical to virtual migration - there should be no issues.

Given it is Linux OS, then you could build you new virtual master and install the same version of NetBackup (including EEBs), then simply copy the /usr/openv directory (and entire contents) to the new master (overwriting what is there - or better yet, moving the clean install out of the way first). Then test and verify it all works.

Of course the new master must have the same hostname (the IP can be different for the transition, but reusing the IP is easiest after to simplify any client & media server updates that may be required).

      Cheers

  • Hello,

Our current master server is having two nodes( no cluster) for high availability and Netbackup is installed on LUN coming from HP3par storage and one Virual name ( VIP). If  node 1 went down we just mount that LUN from node 1 to node 2

    Two Nodes with name:

    Node 1 Hose name : A

    Node 2 Host name : B

and Virtual name is : Node X ( EMM server name is Virtual name)

SO, my new server host name will be virtual name( VIP) i.e. EMM server name? right
