Netbackup compatibility with Hitachi Device

Hi Team,

we have plan to install netbackup 7.6.0.3 on Windows 2012 R2 Standard x64 . The backup hardware device we have is HUS130 (Hitachi) to run backup on disk.

As per hardware compatibility list , it shows HUS130 is not supported with windows 2012 netbackup server.

Can you please suggest if any plug-in can be used to configure HUS130 with netbackup 7.6.0.3 windows 2012 ?

  • You cannot use OST since this is not a dedupe device/appliance.

So, your choices are Advanced or MSDP.

If you have dedupe license (Data Optimization) then by all means - go ahead and configure MSDP.

Just go through all of the preparation and requirements in the dedupe manual before you start.
Ensure you have at least 1.5 GB memory per TB storage on the media server (in addition to 8GB base requirement for memory).
Carefully read through required ingest speed and other requirements and recommendations.

  • While the HUS130 may work with 2012R2, in order to with with NetBackup it needs to have a plugin that works with windows 2012.  It looks like OpenStorage Connector 1.2 is the latest and thats for 2008

The OpenStorage API allows partners to write plug-ins to their storage appliances that allow NetBackup to control when backup images are created, duplicated, and deleted. This would need to be done to support the HUS100 series on windows 2012.

  • How exactly are you planning to use the HDS? Basic? Advanced? OST? The HCL will only list Appliances with OST plugin. Anything else used as Basic or Advanced disk simply needs to be seen by the OS as drive letter or mount point.
  • Hi SymTerry

    Thank you for your reply.

so , Can I use OpenStorage Connector 1.2 for HUS130 to backup with netbackup windows 2012?

  • Hi Marianne

what is the re-commended method to backup if I have hitachi HUS130.

Storage team will assign the LUN's to media server. I will use the same storage to back up the data.

Also, HUS130 doesnot support deduplication  , I am going to use MSDP option.

So, this is just a normal Storage Array that will be presented as normal lun/disk at OS-level, right?
NTFS filesystem mounted as drive letter or folder?

MSDP storage is covered in  NetBackup Deduplication Guide
Chapter 3 - Provisioning the storage

Planning is key to successful deployment.

(Don't forget to go through chapter 1 & 2 as well).

    Good luck!

Yes , this is just a normal Storage Array that will be presented as normal lun at OS-level.

what is your recommendation to use - Advance or OST?

However , My original question was , can I use HUS130 with netbackup 7.6.0.3 windows 2012 (OST or Advance,  any option)

    Thank you !!

  • Hi Marianne,

    Thanks a lot for suggestion.
I will have TB based licensing model , i think it will include MSDP option ?

My media server RAM is 128GB. I hope that would be enough for backup performace.
I am reading the de-dupe guide and will revert in case of any query.

  • Correct.

The NBU 7.6 Platform Base (or “capacity”) licensing model includes Data Protection Optimization (dedupe) Add-on.
