Netbackup disk storage replacement

Hi,

We are replacing the existing Netbackup disk storage with different storage model and would like to understand how to migrate data from old storage to new? Has anyone tried storage level block migration? would it really work?

The only option I know is to connect the new storage to media server and configure storage units  Either setup SLP or manually duplicate all images from existing storage to new storage. Retire the existing storage once migration is completed and point backups to new storage unit. But this approach might take lot of time depending on the amount of data on existing disk.

Any other thoughts or advises on this please?

Thanks

  • If you are simply replacing like for like (as in replacing EMC for Hitachi storage), then it is possible to perform a copy of the data from one storage volume to the new - whether you do this via a block level method or file system copy is for you to determine the best method - as long as the structure of the original volume is retained.

Once completed, the remove the old storage and mount new storage on the same location. All of this needs to be done with NetBackup not running (for obvious reasons).

    Cheers.

Netbackup is on Linux OS and disk is provisioned from existing storage. No LVM in place. Would storage level block migration work? Can we migrate data at storage level (Hitachi to Hitachi storage) and mount the migrated volumes on the media server? I heard Netbackup would store disk signatures and it might create a discrepancies when migrated disk storage is mounted. I could be wrong here. Please advise if it was proven method and any specific steps to be followed or documentation. Thank you all for your responses.

  • If you are replacing only the MSDP storage, you cannot configure the new storage as a separate unit on the existing MSDP server.
The new storage can only be added to the same MSDP storage server to expand the disk space.
As a result, you cannot use duplication or any other NetBackup solution to migrate the data.

Please answer bhdrkzltn's question, and then we can review what your options are.

  • What's the OS? How deduplication volumes are being managed? Any volume manager in place?
