NetBackup health inspection checklist and report

 Dear All,

I just interested in NetBackup system. My company uses NetBackup Enterprise Server 7.1, NetBackup Enterprise Client 7.1, NetBackup Standard Client 7.1 XPLAT 1 Server, etc.

Is there anyone can share how to do regular check to all this software? So, like regular preventive maintenance procedure and report.

I tried to checked it in symantec website, but I just can find install and upgrade checklist.

Please help me...

Thanks

  • You can do a regular count of number of clients with 'bpplclients -allunique -U'.

Good knowledge of your environment is needed so that you do not simply add up the number of hostnames.

For instance, if you have clustered clients and are backing up physical and virtual hostnames, e.g:
    node1
    node2
    virt-host

does not mean that you need 3 licenses - legal requirement is 1 license per physical machine.

Also if you have (for example) a Sun M9000 with 10 partitions, you only need 1 license for the entire M9000, regardless of amount of partitions (clients).

Enterprise Clients are a bit more difficult to count, depending on what features are used - SAN Media Server or Snapshot Client.

Good idea to put bpplclients output in a spreadsheet and add columns for relevant info - cluster, shared footprint, SAN media server, etc.. etc...

I used to have a spreadsheet that we used for auditing clients when I was still doing 1st-line support (2 companies ago). Will see if I can find it.

  • In addition to Mariannes excellent post another few things that may assist

    1. The bpcoverage utility is handy to make sure you are backing up everything on each client out there

    2. Keep an eye on the Late Breaking News section in case you need to apply patches:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH153422

    3. Run an All Log Entries report regularly, sort it by Severity, and take a good look at any warning / critical events as things may be failing invisibly

    4. Go to Summary of all policies - in the client section it will tell you how many unique clients you have so that you can asses some of your license requirements (compare with your licensing - hopefully all registered on the licensing portal - if not ask your Symantec account manager for an Install Base Report)

    Hope this helps

  • Dear Marriane and Mark,

Actually I am a newbie in this system. I just hired in this company. My supervisor want me to do regular preventive maintenance checkup and submit the report regulary but I do not know how to do that.

Do you have any document (step by step article )  that I can use as a guide to do all your suggestion before (preventive maintenance procedure) so I can submit the performance report of the software?

    Please help this newbie people

Really appreciate your help...Thank you very much

    regards,

  • I dont I am afraid - just comes from years of experience and working through all of the guides

Anything I do have i could not relase as it would be my companies property - we do backup audit and health checks as part of our business

What we have advised, although not easy, it the best way to do things - learn the product inside out and you will know what to look for

Hopefully Marianne will come up with her spread sheet

  • Dear Mark and Marianne,
