Netbackup Library Based Tape Drive

I have Traditional Licensing for NBU. I am planning to additional tape library with 4 drives.

Do I need to purchase qty 4 x NBU Library Based Tape Drive?

Any help will be appreciated.

  • Yes, we always need a Library Drive license for each tape drive within a tape library that we intend to use.

(FYI - stand alone tape drives do not require a license, but then who wants to sit there changing tapes).

You may also need an additional Shared Storage Option license for each tape drive if you want to be able to use each tape drive in a library across two or more Media Servers.

Here's a scenario, which might save you some money, which I think is valid...

Two media servers, and two tape libraries each with four tape drives.

        If I zone/present/provision:

2 tape drives from library1 to both mediaA and mediaB (and drive1 has robot control)

2 tape drives from library1 to only mediaA

2 tape drives from library2 to both mediaA and mediaB (and drive1 has robot control)

2 tape drives from library2 to only mediaB

...then it looks to me like whilst I still need 8 Library Drive licenses, I think I only need 4 Shared Storage Option licenses, because only two tape drives out of each library are shared.

        .

But, I'm trying to visualise the weaknesses in the above... which I think is... loss of either media server reduces my pool of available tape drives from 8 to 6.
