NetBackup Migration

Hi All,

I am planning to migrate my Netbackup 7.0.1 Environment to 7.5.0.6. Let me just share some environment details.

Netbackup 7.0.1 with 1 Master and 1 Media Server on Site A, on top of Windows Server 2003. (Naming Convention: NBUMaster01 and NBUMedia01)

Netbackup 7.0.1 with 1 Master and 1 Media Server on Site B, on top of Windows Server 2003. (Naming Convention: NBUMasterDR and NBUMediaDR)

Now I am migrating this environment to NBU 7.5.0.6 on a single Server with both Master+Media role at Site A, on top of Windows server 2008 R2.

Same for the Site B.

I want to confirm what name should I choose for the new Master+Media Server? Should I use the Media server name i-e NBUMedia01? or should I use master server name?

Thanks

  • You should use the original Master Server name (and IP address if possible) for each site

I would follow this path to make life easy

    1. Expire any images on disk owned by the media servers (as long as they have been duplicated to tape of course!)

    2. Transfer ownership of all backups from the media servers to the master servers

    3. Decomission the media servers

    4. Do a full catalog backup

    5. Shut down the masters

    6. Install NBU at the same version and pacth level to the same location on the new servers - which should have the same name

    7. Remap and disk storage to the new server using the same path

    8. Do a catalog restore

    9. Reconfigure tape devices

    Job done!

    Hope this helps

  • Mark Thank you for your response.

I have some confusion in point no 6.

    6. Install NBU at the same version and pacth level to the same location on the new servers - which should have the same name.

I want to install 7.5.0.6, then why should i install 7.0.1 on the new server?

  • This is awesome. It checks all servers.

    SORT

Use this to ensure all of your servers have the necessary OS patches for the upgrade. This used to be a painstakingly tedious task that had to be done manually and which IS required when upgrading NetBackup.

  • In order for the catalog recovery to work, you must be recovering to the same version as the catalog backup was taken. I would do as suggested, and upgrade after you've done the catalog recovery to the new box. That way, you're ultimate recovery is to power up the old master server in the event of a unfortunate migration/upgrade.
