Newdie Question: Scratch Pool

I created a scratch pool in one of our environments. Is there anything else I need to do to have Netbackup start to use this pool. I expected it to put new tapes that I put in, into this pool, but they are still being put into the Netbackup pool.

  • "Barcode Rule" or "New Media" settings should take care of this automatically (we tend to do it manually tho').
  • You need a barcode rule to put new tapes in the scratch pool.
  • But I checked another environment that was already set up with a scratch pool and there is no barcode rule. In that environment, VTL, the tapes we expire are automattically assigned to the scratch pool.
  • are both environments running the same version?

when you created the "scratch" pool --- did you just create a pool with the name scratch  - or did you remember to check the box that says it IS a scratch pool?
  • > the tapes we expire are automattically assigned to the scratch pool. They return to scratch because they were assigned from scratch (manually or by a bar code rule).
  • RETURN_UNASSIGNED_MEDIA_TO_SCRATCH_POOL setting to consider:

From The NetBackup vault report is recalling tapes from offsite, but the tapes are not moving into the scratch pool automatically

    "...
With the RETURN_UNASSIGNED_MEDIA_TO_SCRATCH_POOL set to yes, then these things are true.
    • Any tape media that started out in the scratch pool before it was assigned will go back into the scratch pool once the images have expired and the tape has been unassigned.
    • If a tape media was assigned to a pool without ever being in the scratch pool, then that tape will not go into scratch once it has been expired and unassigned. It will remain in its originating volume pool.
    ..."

    Additionally:

DOCUMENTATION: Certain bp.conf entries, vm.conf entries, and touch files are now set using nbemmcmd in VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 6.0.

  • Version 6.5.3.1.
Yes I did check the box that says it IS a scratch pool. Good question. That would be something I would do. After I create the pool, shouldn't brand new tapes be assigned or do I actually need the barcode rule?

    Thanks for the responses.
  • "Barcode Rule" or "New Media" settings should take care of this automatically (we tend to do it manually tho').
  • I also use custom barcodes so I could create a rule that said all tapes starting with a T go to scratch pool.

but I do NOT use the bp.conf line that when the go scratch to send them back to the scratch pool.  I let them stay in the pool they were used in.  As I only have 3 active volume pools this is not a problem for me and I just keep 10 tapes in the scratch pool for "just in case"
  • > but I do NOT use the bp.conf line that when the go scratch to send them back to the scratch pool. No need for this line in bp.conf, that's the default behavior.
