Recorded media id versus External media id

What are the differences between these two columns ?

New tapes that have never been used for backups will not have anything in 'Recorded Media' field because NBU has not yet written the internal label. It will do so the 1st time the tape is mounted for backup.

If there is a mismatch (e.g. when someone has changed the barcode label and re-added the tape to NBU), NBU will freeze the media the next time the tape is mounted for backup.

There will be an error like this:

"Incorrect media found in drive index #, expected ABC123, found DEF321 ... freezing ABC123"

Recorded media, is a label written to the tape as the first record, whereas external media id is the barcode on the tape. The two labels should match. Netbackup verify both recorded and external media id to ensure the right tape is being used.

In my environment, why am I seeing more tapes in the "External media" column than the "Recorded media" column ?

And what happens when these two columns do not match ?
