Recover NetBackup Database

Hello - I know this is out there somewhere in cyberworld but I wanted to save time and ask. I lost my server and had to do a rebuild. The platform is Server 2003 and I believe my previous netbackup version was 5.0. Now, I went ahead and installed NBU 6.5.6 and now I need to rebuild the databases from tape. Is there a Cliff Note set of instructions somewhere that I can use to get to work. I know I will have to read all the tapes and that is no problem because I have a small library and plenty of time.

If someone can direct me in this are I would really appreciate it. A link or some words of wisdom would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.

God Bless!

  • First, what database you want to recover? Netbackup Catalog or others DBs like SQL, Oracle ...?

Second, Read this document below and follow his instructions:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH52753

Third, consider, as the post of Marianne already quoted, to migrate to version 7.0 or later, since 6.5 is no longer supported by symantec.

Last but not least, if this information is really important in being recovered, orienting you to contact Symantec's support and request a technician to solve for you, because this recovery is very delicate.

  • Marianne - Thank you so much for your comments Yes I know it ran out of support but I wanted to try and recover my files before I perform the upgrade. Anyway, when I actually looked at my New NBU 6.5.6 Installation I noticed it had all of my information there with regards to policies, clients and even robot information. This was amazing to me because I totally lost the C Drive and I replaced it and performed a fresh install of Server 2003. I am not complaining but I have no idea how this happened because I thought all of this information was stored on the C Drive under Program Files.

With that said I connected my library and ran an inventory and it worked just fine. Additionally, I noticed that the image cleanup was successfully runing every 12 hours. Wow! I am tripping at this point. Now, it had expired all of my images that I needed to recover so I am doing the Phase 1 and Phase 2 image recovery procedures now.

Now, I have been away from this for a while and I have two questions:

    1) How can I disable the image cleanup until I finish with my file recovery or is that even possible?

    2) I forgot the command I can use to mark the image as permanent, meaning never expire.

Lastly, I think I located my Catalog Backup Tapes because they have a file on them named 'create_db_info'. Is it best I continue with the image recovery procedures above or restore from catalog backup?

Thank you in advance for your continued support to the members of this site. Your knowledge and willingness to share is well appreciated!

  • Marianne - This issue has been resolved. I am not sure if you can disable the image cleanup process yet but I have recovered my iamges and marked the tapes as infinite so that they never expire. Also, the tapes I thought were Catalog Backups were not. So, once I get this all cleaned up I will start the Catalog Backups to Tape and to Disk. God Bless!

  • Thank you so much. Please close this thread because all of my issues has been resolved. I don't know how ot close it myself or if it is possible for me to do so.
