Required to install NetBackup Client Software on VMs?

Hi all,

Do I need to download NetBackup Client Software on my Windows and Linux VMs if I want to do file-level restores on those VMs? My Master Server is operating on Linux RHEL 8 on NetBackup 8.3, and I'm using VMware vSphere 7.0 to run the VMs.

I noticed that full VM restores work, but when I try doing a file-level restore to my VM, I get an error about not being able to connect to the client and a policy restore error (2820).

  • Hello,
Starting of 8.2 you can perform agentless restore from vmware backup that has the option « enable file-level recovery » enabled in the policy.
This is can only be done from Web UI (second link provided in the comment above).
But to do that, you have to download .sja packages from veritas site and add them on the master server using nbrepo -a (nbrepo -l to check which packages are already there)
Once done, you can log in on your web ui using the url : https://masterserver/webui/login then click on VMware and select your VM, then recovery date then on the right there is recover option click on it and select files and folders (Note: for 8.2 there is a bug with an eeb which makes this option greyed out, and you have to uninstall the eeb, yeah it sucks..)
Anyway, this is an option to do granular restores but the most easy way is to install agent on VMS or restore requested files on a client that has agent already installed and then do a sample copy/paste..

    Good luck !

Do you meet the prerequisites of an agentless restore for a VM?

    How agentless VMware restore works?

I still have clients installed on our VMs. VxUpdate has improved quite a lot to make it easy to upgrade clients too. The agentless restore more or less does the installation of client during the process and then cleans up whatever it did to do the restore after restoring the files.
